Electric cars, bicycles and motorbikes – it was only a matter of time before some genius created an electric pushchair
Motoring editor Jeremy Taylor, Jessica Talbot-Ponsonby and baby Wesley take hills and rough terrain in their stride with the Cybex e-Gazelle.
Road Review: Cybex e-Gazelle S
JT – Sometimes the bloomin’ obvious is staring you in the face. With battery technology improving all the time, mainly driven by the increasing popularity of electric vehicles, perhaps it’s no surprise an electrically-powered stroller was the next great invention.
JT-P – Apparently, demand for electric pushchairs is also growing really fast. The Cybex is a full-size stroller with a multitude of functions. It’s a superb piece of kit for parents – and grandparents – on the move.
And when you say a ‘multitude’ of functions, you really mean it. I needed more time to discover all the Cybex features than the ones on our Ford Explorer EV!
The really clever bit is Smart Assist, helping to pull the pushchair uphill, or brake on the downslopes. A small battery does make the Cybex a little heavier to lift, but that’s a minor drawback for what you gain.
Yes, but the function everybody wanted to talk about during our test really rocked. The pushchair will move itself backwards and forwards to send a baby to sleep. So, while you relax on a park bench, the e-Gazelle goes to work.
What could possibly go wrong next to the duck pond?! No, it’s all totally safe and, once you’ve watched in the simple instruction videos, Cybex’s electric pram is a doddle to use. There is a range of 20 plus adaptable features to fit your child as they grow, too.
Well, technology is a huge part of all our lives these days. The pushchair and extras arrived in several boxes but, despite my initial fears, even I found it pretty straightforward to assemble. A joint effort, naturally!
Having your first child is daunting enough, but all the ‘must have’ paraphernalia that comes with a baby can be mind-boggling. Apart from town-dwellers, anyone living in the countryside will love the Cybex’s battery system, as it works on all terrain.
Like our dirt track…
Even with my limited knowledge of pushchairs, it was obvious the German designers spent long hours thinking of everything parents might need. There’s the obvious stuff, like adjustable handlebar height, large wheels for off-road use and machine washable covers.
And then the ingenious features, like three interchangeable heights on the frame for the various seats or carrycot, which are all easy to remove or attach. I loved the detachable shopping basket – great for a small dog – plus the various bespoke rain covers and canopies for each seat.
Baby Wesley took it all in his stride. He especially liked the additional Cloud T i-Size baby car seat, which can be reclined near flat on the seat, or completely flat outside of the car. If you add the Base T unit, no seat belt is needed and the carrycot then rotates for easier removal or installation.
And as your family grows, the e-Gazelle can be fitted out as a double buggy, too. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife of pushchairs – it does everything. Apart from change a nappy.
