Eve Myles has a big year ahead of her, with three intriguing series set to keep her on our screens throughout 2025. There’s Cold Water on ITV, whisking us all off to a fictional Scottish village – and also The Guest, a female-led thriller tracing the toxic and beguiling relationship between a business owner and her employee. First up, though, is The Crow Girl, which has just dropped on Paramount+ (that’s all episodes – perfect for a weekend binge-watch). We sat down with Eve to hear all about it.
Interview: Eve Myles On The Crow Girl
Hi Eve, how’s life going at the moment?
Doing good this end.
You’ve got a busy year ahead. Let’s start with The Crow Girl, coming soon to Paramount+. Can you give us an elevator pitch for the show?
The Crow Girl is an international best selling book that’s been brilliantly adapted into a six part thriller for Paramount+. It is a twisted, mesmeric story of a DCI and a psychotherapist coming together to track down what soon becomes a manhunt for an unstoppable serial killer.
You play DCI Jeanette Kilburn – how would you describe her?
DCI JK is a mother, wife, and a DCI. She’s spinning more plates than she admits she can handle. She is a woman with a relentless need to put the bad guy away. She won’t stop until she puts who is responsible behind bars. She’s a professional woman who breaks the rules and answers to no one to get the information she needs. Her personal life is a car crash. We quickly see this world closing in professional and personally on her. But her priority is stop this killer and stop them yesterday.
What was it like playing her?
It was an amazing part to play. JK has so many qualities I admire. A woman in charge and taking the the case literally into her own hands. A chaotic, beautiful mess with flaws and cracks she leans into – and never shies away from. It’s also great to play someone who through the journey of the story finds who they really are. ‘Out of the dark comes light…’
How did you get into character?
I get into character the old fashioned way. I dig deep. I cast a wide net out with everything JK around me, and there might be a key to unlocking that particular scene that day.
Did you do anything special to prepare for the role?
I had many conversations with a detective friend of mine. The results were invaluable for this character. I’ve also possibly watched every episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody and forensic/serial killer show on the planet!
You’ve also got Cold Water coming up later this year on ITV. Can you tell us a bit about that?
Cold Water is a six part thriller coming later this year on ITV. It’s an incredible piece written by the brilliant David Ireland and made by the powerhouse team Sister Productions. This is was all shot up and around Glasgow. Superb cast and crew. A very unique and unusual piece of British television. All I can say is that its a bit Twin Peaks meets Fargo with a sprinkle of Hot Fuzz! An absolute gem of a project.
And you’ve also got The Guest coming up. What can we expect from that?
The Guest is an intense, female led thriller. It should be out in a couple of months. It is a story about ambition, opportunity, trauma and love. Matthew Barry has written a very special piece of TV. When I read it, I said yes before the deal was even discussed. A perfect story with an amazing team at Quay Street. A very challenging role.
What has been your favourite project to date?
I don’t have a favourite project, but what I can say is the dramas coming out this year are without doubt the ones that have challenged me and taken me to new places. It’s been thrilling and terrifying. I’ve tested myself and I hope it all works…. If it doesn’t, I’m happy and profoundly grateful I got the chance to spread my wings.
Who has been your favourite actor to work with in the past?
I’ve worked with amazing actors all my career. To mention only one would be unjust. If I had to highlight an individual, it would be Sir Micheal Gambon. Every night he would play it different. Every night I learned something new. Every night I watched in amazement. He was the ultimate team player. His work was alway real, gutsy and tender. He was generous, kind and always having fun with us all. What an incredible man.
Which co-star did you learn the most from?
I learn something new every time a work with someone. I played opposite the mighty Robert Carlyle this year. I watched closely how he tackled dense long speeches and learned so much. I’ve since had those dense, fast, long complicated speeches and through Robert found a way to tackle them. Invaluable advice. It was a masterclass from him. Thanks, Bobby!
What’s a genre you’d like to do more of?
Science fiction or fantasy. I miss the magic of that genre. It’s very freeing and exciting to create in that genre. It’s an open door of ideas.
Who is an actor, writer or director you’d love to work with?
I would love the opportunity to work with Sarah Phelps. She is a powerhouse writer who I’ve admired for years. Also a life long ambition would be to lead a Jimmy McGovern drama… That would be nice.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be Shirley Bassey when I grew up.
If you could give advice to your 15-year-old self, what would it be?
Where you are from is who you are… Celebrate it.
How can we all live a little bit better?
Turning off the internet. Talk with people who matter. Tell them you love them.
Anything fun in the pipeline – professionally or personally?
Hopefully going to run a couple of half marathons this year. I’m determined to be the fittest I can be before I give into middle age, cake and chips.
