Here’s everything we know so far

In this era of nostalgia, reboots are rife – and here’s the latest to get excited about. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have officially reunited on set for Freaky Friday 2, more than two decades after the original film was released. While Curtis admitted she had written to Disney about wanting to make a sequel in 2022 and Lohan teased the reboot in 2023, the news has now been made official by Disney on social media.

So what can we expect from the movie? With Nisha Ganatra directing the movie and the original film’s producer Andrew Gunn back for the follow-up, here’s everything we know so far about Freaky Friday 2.

Recap

Way back in 2003, an American fantasy body-swap film captured the attention of teens across the globe. No, not 13 Going On 30 (that was 2004): we’re talking about Freaky Friday. Centring on mother-daughter duo Anna (Lohan) and Tess (Curtis) Coleman who are struggling to understand each other’s decisions and motivations (classic teenage strife), Freaky Friday traces the aftermath of a mystical body swap experienced by the duo after they’re cursed by a magical Chinese fortune cookie. Of course, the body swap happens on a day of paramount importance for both Anna and Tess: guitarist Anna is scheduled to audition for a music competition at the House of Blues, while Tess’ wedding rehearsal dinner is scheduled for the evening. What ensues is a series of awkward and funny interactions as the mother and daughter get to know each other better – and learn each other’s strife – from the inside out. At the end, the curse is reversed thanks to an act of selfless love.

What Will Happen In Freaky Friday 2?

One thing’s for sure: we won’t be picking up where we left off. Lohan and Curtis are two decades older than they were when Freaky Friday was originally filmed, so we anticipate seeing them in their later family life, with Anna now all grown up. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but one rumour suggests we can anticipate two concurrent body swaps: Tess with Anna’s daughter, and Anna with her soon-to-be stepdaughter.

Who Will Star?

Plenty of the original cast is returning, including:

  • Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman
  • Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess Coleman
  • Mark Harmon as Ryan
  • Chad Michael Murray as Jake
  • Christina Vidal Mitchell as Maddie
  • Haley Hudson as Peg
  • Rosalind Chao as Pei-Pei
  • Lucille Soong as Pei-Pei’s mom
  • Stephen Tobolowsky as Mr Bates

However, there are some fresh faces for the film, too, including:

  • Julia Butters
  • Manny Jacinto
  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan
  • Sophia Hammons

With the return of Pei-Pei and her mother, body swapping is pretty much confirmed, as they ran the Chinese restaurant with the fateful fortune cookie in the original film.
