Everything we know so far

Sitting comfortably in the UK Netflix top 10 for weeks now is a Sky Atlantic original series that has found a new audience: Gangs of London. Both seasons are available to stream, joining Netflix’s bumper roster of gangster dramas, spanning everything from The Gentlemen to Top Boy, Narcos to Griselda, Kin to Peaky Blinders (both of which gained international acclaim first on the BBC). But will there be a Gangs of London season 3? And when will we get to see it? We’ve got the details.

Will There Be A Gangs Of London Season 3?

Yes, Sky has renewed Gangs of London for a third season, and production has been underway since October 2023. Before Gangs of London arrived on Netflix this month, it attracted millions of fans on its original channel, Sky Atlantic – in fact becoming the channel’s second most successful original drama launch ever. It’s only natural that a third season would follow – although we have been waiting two years for it to materialise…

What Will Happen?

Gangs of London season 2 ended with a big old twist: a grieving Elliot Finch (Sopé Dìrísù) sought revenge across the board after the death of his father – for which Sean (Joe Cole) ordered the hit. Koba (Waleed Zuaiter) met his end and Sean took the rap for it, ending the season behind bars while Elliot climbed to the top and crowned himself the underworld’s new king.

We know Gangs of London season 3 will delve into the new order Elliot forges, and Sky has offered a few details as to what we can expect: Elliot and the Dumanis may be at the top, but their whole business is thrown into chaos when a large shipment of cocaine is spiked, leading to the deaths of hundreds of civilians across London. With a new London Mayor looking to make a splash, the incident attracts the attention of the authorities, mounting pressure on the gangs like never before. The ripple effects, Sky tells us, will have devastating consequences across everyone’s personal and professional lives. But this was a targeted attack – so who did it, and why?

As the series moves from strength to strength, a new creative team has been brought on for Gangs of London season 3: lead director and executive producer Kim Hong Sun who has previously worked on Project Wolf Hunting and is acclaimed for his work in South Korea, and lead writer and executive producer Peter McKenna who is best known for his work on Kin. Expect even more incredible cinematography and gripping drama.

Is Gangs Of London Based On A True Story?

No, Gangs of London is entirely fictional, and in fact was originally based on the 2006 PSP game of the same name, part of the Getaway franchise. That said, everything is based on extensive research into London’s real ganglands, with input from ex gang members (including Karl Lokko and Duro Oye), criminologists and detectives. For example, it’s true that many gang leaders use legitimate businesses as a front for their illicit activities – oftentimes property as with the Wallace family (or, as we see in Kin, a car dealership). In 2017, £90 billion was thought to have been laundered through London, largely thought to be thanks to the capital’s hugely profitable (and seemingly insatiable) drug market.

Meanwhile, the international narratives are true to reality: drug smuggling is a global enterprise, but it’s usually Turkey that functions as the ‘handover’ to the West, rather than the Balkan Route we see in Gangs of London. Likewise, real people have informed some of the series’ characters. Asif Afridi (Asif Raza Mir), for example, controls the heroine route from Pakistan to London and has a corrupt hand in politics – he is based on real-life drug baron Haji Ayub Afridi who is considered the primary founder of Afghanistan’s drug trade.

Gangs Of London Season 3 Release Date

No news just yet on when Gangs of London season 3 will air, but we know it will consist of eight episodes and air on Sky Atlantic (and stream on NOW) long before it makes its way to Netflix.

When the series was renewed for season 3 in October 2023, we were told production was already underway – so we could see Gangs of London season 3 before the end of 2024. Season 1 aired in April 2020, while season 2 aired two and a half years later in October 2022. A gap of the same length would put us in April 2025.
