Gosh, we hope so

If you’re anything like me, you binged Heartbreak High season two in two days flat, leaving only one question to be answered: will there be a Heartbreak High season three? With the fate of the school, Malakai’s future and bird psycho’s punishment all up in the air, there’s certainly more ground to cover. Here’s everything we know so far about whether Netflix will answer our prayers with a third season.

Heartbreak High: Season 3?

If you’re partial to a high school drama (no judgement here), Heartbreak High is your next great watch. A soft reboot of the classic Australian series of the same name, it’s like Sex Education if it was set in Sydney, Australia. What’s not to love?

What Is Heartbreak High About?

Heartbreak High centres on Amerie Wadia (Ayesha Madon), a brash, working-class high school student who becomes a social pariah when a map detailing Hartley High School’s sexual exploits is discovered on the wall of an abandoned corridor. All of the students named on the map are forced to attend a new sexual education course titled the ‘Sexual Literacy Tutorial’, shortened to SLT – which they jokingly pronounce as ‘sluts’. Amerie takes the blame for producing the map, with her fellow students resentfully nicknaming her ‘map bitch’ and excluding her from the social scene for her crimes. Only Darren (James Majoos) and Quinni (Chloé Hayden) will talk to her, and the three set to work figuring out who framed her.

But Amerie didn’t create the map alone: her best friend Harper McLean (Asher Yasbincek) helped her. But, after a music festival they attended together at the weekend, Harper isn’t talking to Amerie anymore, and Amerie has no idea why. As she fights to make it up to her fellow students, Amerie also grapples to restore her friendship with Harper – with a lot of teenage angst and messiness en route.

The series has been praised for its sensitive exploration of a plethora of problems faced by school students today, from neurodiversity to toxic masculinity, racism to friendship, sexuality to drug use. It’s like a less intense Euphoria, or a slightly more party-focussed Sex Education.

What Happens In Season 2?

At the end of season one, Amerie and Harper reunite, after Harper details exactly what happened on the fateful night of the music festival. Though the duo fear drug dealer Chook (Tom Wilson), they return to school for term two with their friendship renewed, hoping for a more peaceful term. But, with the arrival of a new student, a new PE teacher firmly opposed to SLTs, a new friend group promoting abstinence (aka the ‘Puriteens’), and a mysterious new assailant plaguing the duo with creepy dead birds (known to the characters as ‘bird psycho’), the term is set to be anything but simple.

Will There Be A Season 3?

No news just yet on whether there will be a third season of Heartbreak High – but our fingers are tightly crossed. Heartbreak High season two leaves lots of questions unanswered: what will happen to Hartley High, what did Malakai write in the letter and will he ever return to Sydney?

With season two announced just over a month after season one dropped, keep your eyes peeled for updates.

What Will Happen In Season 3?

If Heartbreak High returns for a third season, possible plot points include:

  • Quinni settling into life as school president, and negotiating power with her second-in-command, Sasha
  • The ups and downs of Ca$h and Darren’s relationship
  • Spider and Missy’s relationship: will they continue to see each other, and will they go public?
  • Will the students even return to Hartley High, since a large portion has burned down?
  • Malakai’s move to Switzerland: perhaps he will return to Hartley after all, or perhaps we will see him settling in overseas

Who Is Bird Psycho?

Spoiler alert: new student Rowan is revealed to be Bird Psycho in the final episode of season two of Heartbreak High. Throughout the season, he was the anonymous student taunting Amerie and Harper with dead birds and online harassment.

Why Was Rowan Bird Psycho?

So what was Rowan’s motive? We may have been told Rowan is the new student from Dubbo, but it turns out he used to live in Sydney – and hang out with Amerie, no less. After nursing a bird back to health together, mean spirited kids taunted Amerie and Rowan for being losers, but Amerie blamed the idea on Rowan. Angered by her betrayal, Rowan stormed home and smashed up his bedroom, terrifying his brother Jett who runs from the house in fear. Jett runs into the road and is tragically struck by a car, killing him. Rowan and his family move to Dubbo, but when Rowan returns to school in Sydney many years later, he still blames Amerie for his death.
