Nicole Kidman’s Holland Could Be An Even Better Don’t Worry Darling

All is not what it seems in Holland, the titular picturesque town in this brand new Prime Video film starring Nicole Kidman. Here’s everything we know so far

Nicole Kidman continues to fulfil her pledge of working with more female directors, and the next to be crossed off her list is Mimi Webb, who previously directed Fresh starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Webb’s sophomore feature film is Holland, which has gathered even more of an A-list cast, written by Andrew Sodroski and produced by Kate Churchill, Peter Dealbert and Per Saari with Kidman herself. Here are all of the details.

What Is Holland About?
Described by Prime as a ‘wildly unpredictable thriller’, Holland is set in the titular location: a picturesque, windmill- and tulip-filled town in Michigan – crucially not the Netherlands, though the brand new trailer is fit to burst with Dutch dancing, clogs and bonnets. We centre on Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman), a Stepford wife style teacher and homemaker, and her life with her community-pillar husband Fred (Matthew Macfadyen) and their son Harry (Jude Hill).
‘Everyday, I get to wake up in the best place on Earth,’ Nancy says as the trailer opens. But then later she adds: ‘It may seem like we have everything all together, but right under the surface, it’s like we’re being strangled.’ Thus Nancy begins to unravel, and the trailer descends into a Hitchcock-style thriller of hallucinations and topsy-turvy confusion. Nancy’s husband seems to hold a villainous place in the film, as Nancy teams up with her colleague Dave (Gael García Bernal) to spy on him. ‘It’s like, you know, you should leave a scab alone,’ Nancy’s voiceover continues in the trailer. ‘In picking it, you’re only going to hurt yourself. But you do it anyway.’
There are definite Don’t Worry Darling vibes, Olivia Wilde’s buzzy 2022 film which centres on a housewife in a too-good-to-be-true 1950s town, which turns out (spoilers) to be a simulation. In the works for more than a decade (Naomi Watts and Brian Cranston were originally pegged to star way back in 2013), it’s not clear just yet which direction Holland will move in, but there’s definitely a big secret looming over the town.

Is Holland A Real Place?
Yes, Holland is a real town in Michigan with, you guessed it, a rich Dutch heritage. Established by Dutch Americans in the mid 19th century, the heritage is remembered in the local Holland Museum, the Cappon House Museum, the Dutch Village, the Settlers House Museum and the Tulip Time Festival held annually in May. The town is also home to a park called Windmill Island, home to a 250-year-old Dutch windmill called De Zwaan – the only authentic, working Dutch windmill in the States.
As well as being set here, Holland was filmed in the real Holland, including at Windmill Island Gardens. Additional filming took place in Nashville Tennessee.
