Everything we know so far
House of the Dragon season 2 is all wrapped up, with the finale airing on 4 August to very mixed reviews. With season 3 likely to be two years off, fans have been looking even further ahead to learn the fate of the popular series. Here’s everything we know so far about House of the Dragon season 4.
Will There Be House Of The Dragon Season 4?
Yes, HBO has confirmed there will be a fourth season of House of the Dragon – but warns fans that this will be the last. The news follows the much-awaited season 2 finale which aired on Sunday 4 August. Season 3 is anticipated to launch in summer 2026.
Is this new information? Slightly: we expected season 4 was on the cards after legendary author of the book series George R R Martin visited season 2 on set and wrote on his blog in December 2024: ‘I also spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of House of the Dragon. They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… Though two days was not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure 20 days would have been enough.’
Will There Be Another Spin Off?
A couple of spin-offs in George R R Martin’s universe are in the works at HBO, including:
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Based on Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight (one of three stories making up The Tales of Dunk and Egg), this six-episode series will be set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Production has commenced, meaning this spin-off will most likely come first.
- Ten Thousand Ships: An Odyssey-like epic set around 1000 years before the events of Game of Thrones, following warrior queen Nymeria (the namesake of Arya Stark’s direwolf) and the surviving Rhoynars who travel from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by Valyria and their dragons.
- Aegon’s Conquest: HBO are also keen on a prequel exploring the original Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, which would function as a House of the Dragon prequel.
- Nine Voyages: An animated series exploring the adventures of a young Corlys Velaryon (aka The Sea Snake) before the events of House of the Dragon. Originally intended as live action, budget restrictions have made an animated stand-alone series more likely.
- The Golden Empire: Another animated series exploring Yi-Ti, Martin’s fantasy version of Imperial China briefly mentioned in his books.
A John Snow spin-off entitled Snow was also in the works for a while, but Kit Harrington confirmed in April 2024 that production had stalled. ‘Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,’ Harington said. ‘So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.’
Release Date
No news just yet on when we can expect to see House of the Dragon season 4. Based on season 1 commencing in August 2022 and season 2 airing from June 2024, we anticipate season 3 in summer 2026 and season 4 in summer 2028 – so a long way off. Fingers crossed production have a speedier timeline in the works.
