Malaika’s Letter For Change

Dear World,

I hope this letter finds you well, filled with curiosity and open to the voices of young people longing for change.

From an early age, I have witnessed the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in how society treats boys and girls. It has always troubled me that boys are often given more freedom, more opportunities and more trust, while girls are confined to a more limited existence. But let me tell you, girls are resilient, powerful and capable of transforming the world if only we are given the chance.

Girls can be leaders, adventurers and trailblazers. We can break free from the stereotypes and expectations that have held us back for far too long. We can create, innovate and inspire. We have dreams, desires and ambitions that deserve to be nurtured and celebrated.

It’s disheartening to still hear phrases like ‘boys can, but girls can’t’ echoing in our communities and even within our own families. We deserve to be seen, heard and valued for who we are, not limited by outdated beliefs and biases. It’s time to challenge these notions and create a society where gender does not dictate our worth or potential.

I believe in a world where girls can freely choose their favourite colour, play outside without fear, and form friendships based on shared interests rather than societal expectations. We long to wear clothes that reflect our individuality and express our true selves. We yearn for the freedom to explore, learn and grow without arbitrary barriers.

The journey towards gender equality requires collective effort. It is not just the responsibility of girls and women; it is a shared responsibility of society as a whole. We need to educate, empower and support one another. We need to challenge stereotypes, dismantle systemic barriers and create inclusive spaces for everyone to thrive.

I dream of a future where every girl’s potential is realised, where her talents and contributions are celebrated, and where she is never made to feel inferior or limited by her gender. We need to preserve and protect the rights and opportunities we have fought so hard to gain and we must continue to push for progress in areas that have yet to be explored.

As a young advocate, I can tell you that being a voice for my community is both empowering and challenging. It is a journey of self-discovery, growth and resilience. I draw inspiration from the stories of those who have paved the way before me, and I am driven by the desire to create a world where every girl’s voice is amplified and valued.

However, advocacy is not without its challenges. We face obstacles, prejudices and biases that can sometimes dim our spirits. Meaningful support is crucial in helping us navigate these challenges and empowering us to overcome them. We need mentors, allies and resources that can uplift and guide us, ensuring that our voices are not only heard but also taken seriously.

There are countless causes that deserve attention and action. Each one is a vital thread in the tapestry of change. We must address issues of climate justice, education, health, identity, leadership, peace and justice. We must challenge the systems that perpetuate violence and inequality and we must strive for a society that uplifts and empowers every individual, regardless of their gender.

In writing this letter, I hope to convey the urgency and importance of creating a gender-equal world. I want to remind you of the immense potential that lies within every girl, waiting to be unleashed. I implore you to listen to our stories, our hopes and our fears. Together, let us write a new chapter in history, one where equality reigns and every girl’s dreams can flourish.

With hope and determination,

Malaika
