We lived through Barbie, and we balked at the idea of a Polly Pocket movie, but Mattel has plenty more live-action adaptations of its toys up its sleeves. This one, however, is a reboot: Masters of the Universe was first a cartoon, then a live-action, critically-panned yet cult-loved film starring Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Courteney Cox and more, released in 1987. Almost 40 years later, it’s time for a reboot – and it’s another star-studded journey across the universe. Here’s everything we know about Masters of the Universe.

Masters Of The Universe: Plot, Cast, Release Date

It may be close to 40 years since the original live action Masters of the Universe landed in cinemas, but this reboot has been on the cards for almost half of that time. Toyed with as early as 2007, this iteration of Masters of the Universe has passed through different studios, directors, and stars before the project fell into Amazon’s hands in 2023.

Fast forward to 2025 and filming is finally underway – in London, no less. ‘After several months of intense training, I’m thrilled to share that we’re officially in production on #MastersOfTheUniverse,’ lead star Nicholas Galitzine writes on Instagram. ‘Our director Travis Knight has assembled the most incredible ensemble cast and created a stunning tapestry of Eternia and its surrounding world. What Will Happen?

Masters of the Air centres on Adam, a prince who crashlanded on Earth in a spaceship aged 10, where he was separated from his magical Power Sword – his only link to his home planet, Eternia. Almost two decades later, Adam manages to track it down, and he is whisked back across space to defend Eternia against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat this powerful villain, Adam needs to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.
