The British star will play a prime minister in the upcoming series

From Dr Foster to Vigil and Gentleman Jack, Suranne Jones has starred in some of the most addictive TV dramas of the past decade. And now she’s fronting another: a high-stakes political thriller called The Choice, which was announced among a spate of new launches for Netflix. Read on for the lowdown.

The Choice: Everything We Know So Far

The Choice is a new five-part series created by Bridge Of Spies writer Matt Charman. It will be the first Netflix role for BAFTA-winning star Suranne Jones, who is also an executive producer on the show.

What Is The Choice About?

In the new series, Jones will star as Abigail Dalton, a recently elected British prime minister, whose popularity is being threatened by a healthcare crisis. Julie Deply, meanwhile, plays Vivienne Toussaint, the first female French president who is campaigning for re-election – even if this means making controversial policy decisions about France’s borders.

The official synopsis reads: ‘A summit between the two women could be the answer to their prayers, if they can agree. But when Dalton’s husband is kidnapped and Toussaint is blackmailed, they both face unimaginable choices.

‘Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both?’

Who Is In The Cast?

Alongside Jones and Deply as the two female leads, the cast includes Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story’s Corey Mylchreest as Toussaint’s stepson Matheo Lewis, and Lucian Msamati as Dalton’s chief of staff Kofi Adomako.

Top Boy star Ashley Thomas, meanwhile, will play Dalton’s husband Dr Alex Anderson, and Jehnny Beth (Anatomy of a Fall) will play Toussaint’s chief of staff Adrienne Pelletier. James Cosmo (Game of Thrones) will play Max Dalton, Dalton’s father.

Speaking about the new series, Charman said: ‘Writing a tense, high-stakes political thriller about the two most powerful women in the world, and then having Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy play them, is a dream come true for me.’

When Will The Choice Premiere?

Sadly, we’ve got a little while to wait. Filming is set to start this spring, and the show will land on Netflix in 2025.
