Pachinko Season 2: Plot, Cast, Release Date

What Will Happen?

Pachinko’s season 1 finale was bittersweet: Sunja’s husband Isak was arrested by Japanese authorities, while Sunja decided to set up a kimchi stall in the market to provide for her family. Season 2 will pick up in Osaka 1945, with Sunja forced to make dangerous decisions to ensure her family’s survival in World War II. Meanwhile in Tokyo 1989, Solomon explores new, humble beginnings.

‘Where we’re going in season two, the stakes get even bigger,’ executive producer Theresa Kang-Lowe told Deadline. ‘It’s actually even more dramatic because you see, with the occupation, how something is coming towards everyone in Korean-based families. The scale grows and the stakes get even higher.

‘We always say that season one is epic; season two gets to an even greater place of epic-ness in scale,’ she added.

Is There A Trailer?

Yes, and you can watch it below.

Is It Based On A Book?

Yes, Pachinko is based on Min Jee Lee’s bestselling 2017 novel of the same name. A multigenerational epic saga, Pachinko follows a Korean family from 1910 to the late 1980s. The TV adaptation, however, jumps backwards and forwards in time, showing two key characters in parallel: Sunja, who grows up in Japanese-occupied Korea, before moving to Japan; and Solomon, Sunja’s grandson, who moves back to Japan from the US.

Season 1 ended with Sunja in 1938 and Solomon in the 1980s – so Pachinko season 2 will go through World War II for Sunja and focus on her sons Mozas and Noah, while we will see the fallout of Solomon’s ‘deal with the devil’ in the late ‘80s.

However, Solomon’s storyline will reportedly depart from the book, extending beyond Lee’s ending.
