The Royal revealed the ‘relieving’ news yesterday afternoon

Last year, after speculation regarding abdominal surgery and a step back from duties, Catherine, Princess of Wales revealed the sad news she was undergoing treatment for cancer. Coming in the same year as the King’s cancer diagnosis, it was a blow for the royal family – and Kate endured intense speculation online and in the media as she embarked on nine months of preventative chemotherapy out of the spotlight.

One year later, Kate is finally able to reveal her cancer is in remission. To mark the news, the Princess paid a visit to The Royal Marsden hospital, where she was treated. Taking to Instagram, Kate wrote: ‘I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year.

‘My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything.

‘We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.’

Kate also took the opportunity to reveal she is now a patron of the west London hospital, which is a cancer specialist hospital founded in 1851. According to the BBC, the Royal Marsden treats just under 60,000 patients every year.

‘In my new role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden, my hope is, that by supporting groundbreaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives, and transform the experience of all those impacted by cancer,’ the Princess of Wales writes.

‘It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery,’ she added. ‘As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.’

The Princess of Wales also posted an accompanying video on Instagram, highlighting the valuable work of The Royal Marsden, which you can watch below.

What Does Cancer In Remission Mean?

In September 2024, Princess Kate revealed she had completed her course of chemotherapy, but it wasn’t until January 2025 that she revealed her cancer is now in remission. So what does it mean? According to British charity Cancer Research UK, if a doctor says your cancer is in remission, ‘this means that there is no sign of cancer in your body’. Doctors use ‘remission’ instead of the more final term ‘cured’, because cancer can come back. ‘If there are any cancer cells left,’ Cancer Research adds, ‘there are [either] too few to find, too few to cause any symptoms, [or] they are in an inactive state and are not growing.

‘Doctors can’t be sure that the cancer has completely gone after treatment,’ the charity explains. ‘So they may suggest that you have some type of long term treatment. This might include hormone therapy or a targeted cancer drug. This is called adjuvant treatment. Adjuvant treatment can also be a course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy after surgery. The aim of this treatment is to try to prevent cancer from coming back.’

What Cancer Did Princess Kate Have?

Kate and the royal family never revealed the type of cancer the princess was diagnosed with. All we know is that cancer cells were found when Kate underwent planned abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January 2024, and she was recommended a course of ‘preventative chemotherapy’.
