We can’t wait to binge this limited series
Emerald Fennell and Barry Keoghan have put the suave yet unnerving conman firmly back on the agenda with Saltburn – and Netflix is leaning in. Sometime in 2024, a limited series called Ripley will land on the streaming platform, led by Andrew Scott. Details are scant – but here’s everything we’ve gathered so far.
Ripley: Everything We Know So Far
Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley was famously adapted for the big screen in the 1999 movie of the same name, starring Matt Damon. It was star-studded, with a young Matt Damon leading the flick accompanied by Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It wasn’t the first adaptation of Highsmith’s conniving character, with Purple Noon released in 1960, and a TV series called Studio One adapting the novels in the 1950s. Good news for Ripley fans: Netflix is bringing the novel back to the small screen in 2024 – and Andrew Scott has bagged the starring role.
Is he worried about taking on such an infamous character? Not in the slightest. ‘I feel like you’re required to love and advocate for your characters, and your job is to go, Why? What’s that?’ he told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. ‘You don’t play the opinions, the previous attitudes that people might have about Tom Ripley. You have to throw all those out, try not to listen to them, and go, Okay, well, I have to have the courage to create our own version and my own understanding of the character.’ No stranger to portraying creepy characters (Moriarty in Sherlock, and his role in Black Mirror to name just two), we think Scott will embody the role immaculately.
What Is Ripley About?
The eight-part Netflix series will draw on the same plot as the 1999 film, with con artist Tom Ripley sent to Italy to convince spoiled playboy Dickie Greenleaf to return home. Of course, Dickie refuses, and Tom is drawn into a world of splendour, taking deceitful measures to retain his spot there.
‘Tom Ripley is a grifter scraping by in early ’60s New York,’ Netflix says. ‘He’s hired by a wealthy industrialist to travel to Italy to try to convince the man’s dilettante son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Accepting the job is Tom’s first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder.’ Meanwhile, Dickie’s girlfriend suspects a darkness underlies Tom’s shiny, friendly facade.
Who Stars?

Is There A Trailer?
No trailer just yet, but Netflix has published our first look at Scott as Ripley.
The whole thing looks very moody, with a touch of old glamour – mainly thanks to the rich black and white, evoking that 1960s allure. If you’re excited to see the sun-soaked colour of Italy, let’s put a pin in that right now: the whole series was, in fact, shot in black and white.
