Tesla's new energy storage system that could save homeowners thousands
As the UK takes steps towards a more sustainable future, residential energy management remains one of the biggest challenges. Tesla has unveiled its Powerwall 3, marking a significant step forward in a potential transition to cleaner, more efficient energy use.
Tesla Powerwall 3
Powerwall 3 is Tesla’s latest innovation in home energy storage, a battery system that allows homeowners greater control over how they manage and utilise their energy. It offers a serious upgrade on the Powerwall 2, providing more than double the power output of its predecessor. With power up to 11.04 kW, it can power homes of any size, providing flexibility and efficiency for homeowners.
The system harnesses excess solar energy, storing it for use at night, when there’s no sun, or during an outage. Powerwall 3 also has an inbuilt solar inverter, eliminating the need for a separate third-party one, lowering installation cost, increasing efficiency and offering a cleaner installation on the wall.
Suitable In All Conditions
Powerwall is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, and can operate in temperatures from -20°C to 50°C, as well as offering enhanced backup protection. It automatically detects power outages and becomes the home’s primary energy source. The Storm Watch feature prepares for potential outages by charging the Powerwall to maximum capacity when severe weather is forecast. It can also be installed indoors or outdoors, maintaining operation in high humidity or flooding up to 60cm deep.
Powerwall’s Heat Mode will intelligently warm the battery to improve charge/discharge and will precondition when cold.
Potential Savings
UK homeowners will be able to utilise the Self-Consumption mode, giving them the ability to store excess solar energy generated during the day for nighttime use, potentially reducing grid reliance by up to 90%. Furthermore, the Time-Based Control feature optimises savings by charging Powerwall when electricity rates are low and using the stored energy during peak pricing hours. This may result in annual savings of up to £1,450 when paired with a solar system*.
Finally, there will be additional benefits for Tesla vehicle owners, as Powerwall 3 unlocks features like Charge on Solar, allowing cars to charge using only excess energy produced by the solar system. This charges Tesla vehicles at one of the lowest costs possible.
