What Happens In The Diplomat Season 2?

The Diplomat’s season 1 finale unleashed a bombshell: the British prime minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) was the man who ordered the British aircraft carrier to be blown up off the coast of Iran, setting all of the season’s action into motion. On the cliffhanger, series creator Debora Cahn tells Netflix: ‘I wanted it to make people want more. I wanted to bring together all of the different dynamics of the political relationships and the personal relationships in one event that splits apart all at the same time.’ Well, mission accomplished. So what happens next?

Season 2 pulls us back to London, where a deadly explosion sends shockwaves across the city. After the revelations of the season 1 finale – in which it seems the PM has ordered a second explosion – it doesn’t come as a surprise. Regardless, Kate’s (Keri Russell) worst fears are confirmed: the order came from inside the British government. As she edges closer to the truth, her fraught marriage with fellow diplomat Hal (Rufus Sewell) – who is very much alive, and perhaps Kate’s only ally – keeps tensions high. But Kate is also dealing with a complicated dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and a threatening visit from the United States Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
