Fancy wild swimming in Canary Wharf?
When it comes to green spaces, Canary Wharf might not be the first place that springs to mind – yet the London neighbourhood is set to become the new London base for the Eden Project.
The new partnership aims to create a model of how biodiversity can thrive in urban environments, bringing new greenery and wildlife to the financial district. First up we’ll be seeing the creation of a ‘green spine’ through the centre of the Canary Wharf estate, made up of parks, gardens, floating pontoons, bridges and waterside access. The goal is to encourage more casual visitors to the Wharf, with people encouraged to take part in activities like paddle boarding, open water swimming and kayaking.
Canary Wharf Group has been implementing environmental initiatives for many years now. Since 2012, the developer has bought 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources, and for over 10 years it has sent no waste to landfill. This partnership with the Eden Project will build on these efforts, with the overriding aim of reaching Net Zero by 2030. It’s hoped that Canary Wharf will become a global example of innovation on biodiversity within an urban space, inspiring other cities around the world.
‘CWG and the Eden Project are both based on the transformational redevelopment of a former industrial site into a world-renowned icon of regeneration,’ says David Harland, Chief Executive of Eden Project International. ‘Our exciting new partnership feels natural and vital. Eden’s known track record in sustainability leadership aligned with the Canary
Wharf Group’s consistently high sustainability ratings for their buildings offers a great platform upon which to build on.’
Based in Cornwall, The Eden Project is an educational charity and social enterprise. It was founded over 20 years ago with the mission of building relationships between people and the natural world.
Work on the first Canary Wharf regeneration project will begin later this year, and hopefully be completed by next January. The Eden Project will take office space in 1 Canada Square, creating a base for which the charity can extend its activities across London.
