The first details are in for The Fantastic 4: First Steps

What do The Last of Us, The Crown, Stranger Things and The Bear all have in common? A star in The Fantastic 4: First Steps. Everyone loves a reboot – or so film studios believe. In a bid to keep extending the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel Studios and Disney teased the first details of the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, set to be the 37th film in the Universe. Here’s everything we know so far.

The Fantastic 4: First Steps: Cast, Plot, Release Date

Back in 2015, Fantastic Four (aka FANT4STIC) – a reboot of 2005’s Fantastic Four – was a huge flop. But, with Disney now funding the MCU, it’s time to reintroduce these comic book characters with a whole new star-studded cast of actors. Plans for a reboot have been in the works since July 2019, but the ball didn’t start rolling until early 2023 when casting got underway and the script was firmed up. Flash forward to summer 2024, and a deluge of details are teased at San Diego Comic Con.

It’s time to be reintroduced to the Fantastic Four. In First Steps, we will see:

  • Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic
  • Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman
  • Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing
  • Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer
  • Ralph Ineson as Galactus
  • Paul Walter Hauser
  • John Malkovich

Robert Downey Jr. is also expected to appear as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in a post-credits scene.

Back in 2015, Miles Teller starred as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Kate Mara as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

What Will Happen?

Early details reveal The Fantastic 4: First Steps will be set in a 1960s alternative reality in New York City – making way for some very cool retro-futuristic settings. It is thought that NYC’s Baxter Building emblazoned with a big 4-symbol, will serve as a landing platform for the quad, similar to Stark Tower in The Avengers.

‘We’re really stepping into, I think, the essence of what this comic is and the original Marvel Family,’ Pascal shared at San Diego Comic Con.

Is There A Fantastic Four Teaser?

Marvel has not yet officially released a teaser, but a concept reel was showcased at San Diego Comic Con illustrating the Space Age aesthetic following an introduction by director Matt Shakman. ‘We’re doing a retro-future ‘60s,’ he said. ‘Syd Mead was an inspiration. The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism. I love the Fantastic Four. I love their power set. We want to be true to the comics but we want to be true to life.’

According to Variety, the teaser was like a newsreel, featuring moments such as Mr. Fantastic (Pascal) speaking to a bored classroom in a ‘Fantastic Science’ class, the team’s flying Fantasticar, space suits, a rocket launch and the Thing (Moss-Bachrach) featuring as a mystery contestant on a dating show. At the end, the film’s villain Galactus (Ineson) appeared.

‘The 1960s is pretty cool,’ Kirby shared when asked what the best part of the film would be, while Pascal quipped, ‘Us!’.

Where Was It Filmed?

The Fantastic 4: First Steps is currently filming in the UK, just outside London at Pinewood Studios (Pinewood Rd, Slough, Iver SL0 0NH), in summer 2024. Filming kicked off on Tuesday 30 July 2024.

Release Date

The Fantastic 4: First Steps will be released in the US on 25 July 2025.
