Get ready for Apple TV+’s highly anticipated series, The New Look, which infuses history, style and the captivating lives of the people who defined modern fashion. TV’s most stylish history lesson set during World War II, it predominantly tells the story of Christian Dior, but with lots of Coco Chanel woven in too. The show debuts globally in February 2024; here are all the details we have so far.
Plot
Stepping into the world of post-WWII Paris, historical drama The New Look follows the journey of fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel amidst the city’s rebirth. Inspired by true events and directed by Todd A Kessler, the 10-episode series delves into the intertwined lives of the biggest fashion designers of the time, as they navigated the horrors of post-war life while also helming the era’s haute couture evolution. The show will explore the rivalries between the two designers, as well as touching on contemporaries like Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Saint Laurent.
As Apple TV+ summarises, the series ‘focuses on the pivotal moment in the 20th century when [Paris] led the world back to life through its fashion icon, Christian Dior’.
The official synopsis continues: ‘As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel’s reign as the world’s most famous fashion designer is put into jeopardy. The interwoven saga follows the surprising stories of Dior’s contemporaries and rivals from Chanel to Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga and more; and provides a stunning view into the atelier, designs and clothing created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior.’
Where Was The New Look Filmed?
The New Look was filmed exclusively in Paris, beginning in May 2022. Dior’s House in the city, 30 Montaigne, plays a key role in the series – renowned as a place filled with history and secrets.
What’s Behind The Title?
The title of the series pays tribute to Dior’s Spring/Summer collection in 1947, famously known as the New Look – and representing a pivotal moment in fashion history.
The Cast
The New Look has a star-studded cast. Oscar winner Juliette Bionche (Chocolat, Paradise Highway) is taking on the role of Coco Chanel, alongside Emmy Award winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline) as Christian Dior. Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, meanwhile, stars as Christian’s sister Catherine Dior alongside John Malkovich (Con Air) as French couturier Lucien Lelong.
The Trailer
Release Date
The series will premiere on Apple TV+ with the first three episodes on 14 February 2024, with subsequent episodes airing weekly. Binge-watching this series won’t be an option until 3 April 2024, when all episodes become streamable.
