Is There Going To Be A Reboot Of The Office?

Rumours of a reboot of The Office are reaching fever pitch – so what’s the truth?
Whether you’re a staunch defender of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s original series, you are merely an unapologetic fan of Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and his band of bumbling employees, or you’ve never tuned in at all, you’ve certainly at least heard of The Office. With its mockumentary style, it sparked a whole new mode of sitcom, paving the way for the likes of Parks and Recreation, Modern Family and Abbott Elementary. More than two decades after the series came to a close in the UK in 2003, and over 10 years after the series finished in the US in 2013 (after a whopping 201 episodes), rumours are now circulating that The Office is getting a reboot. So, is it true? C&TH investigates…
The Office Reboot: Everything We Know So Far
Is There Going To Be A Reboot Of The Office?
First thing’s first: yes, a reboot of The Office is in the works – but it’s not a reboot as we know it. Rather than repeating all of the events that happened in the original British or American series, this ‘reboot’ will cover new ground at a different office in the same universe as The Office.
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are reportedly co-creating the series; Daniels previously adapted and wrote on the original American series before moving over to Parks and Recreation, while Koman is best known for writing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien for seven years, and co-creating, writing and producing Nathan for You.
Daniels reportedly opened a writers room in January 2024 to begin work on the new iteration of the vastly popular US version of the sitcom (that’s right – this definitely isn’t a reboot of the British version). While the original series focussed on the office of a paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania, we’re not yet sure what the characters of the reboot will do for work. With Abbott Elementary covering schools and Parks and Recreation covering local government, we anticipate the reboot of The Office will focus on a just-as-mundane office as the original. The possibilities are truly endless.
Who Will Star In The Reboot?
Sabrina Impacciatore and Domhnall Gleeson are attached to the project, Variety recently confirmed. They would star in an ensemble cast similar to the original series. Impacciatore is an Italian actress who attracted global fame and acclaim with her performance in the second season of The White Lotus, which also bagged her an Emmy nomination. There she proved she is a deft hand at dead pan comic acting – perfect for The Office. Meanwhile, Gleeson is an Irish actor known for a plethora of films (About Time, Ex Machina, Star Wars and Brooklyn, to name a few) as well as his very famous father, Brendan Gleeson.
Who Starred In The Original?
Steve Carell led the original American version of The Office, and while he was certainly an established name at the time, the rest of the cast were relatively unknown at the outset. Especially Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer who play Dwight, Jim and Pam respectively.
The main cast of The Office (plus some special mentions) was as follows:
- Steve Carell as Michael Scott
- Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute
- John Krasinski as Jim Halpert
- Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly
- B. J. Novak as Ryan Howard
- Ed Helms as Andy Bernard
- James Spader as Robert California
- Leslie David Baker as Stanley Hudson
- Brian Baumgartner as Kevin Malone
- Kate Flannery as Meredith Palmer
- Angela Kinsey as Angela Martin
- Oscar Nunez as Oscar Martinez
- Melora Hardin as Jan Levinson
- Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor
- Ellie Kemper as Erin Hannon
- Amy Ryan as Holly Flax
- Catherine Tate as Nellie Bertram
- Jake Lacy as Pete Miller
- Amy Adams as Katy Moore
- Rashida Jones as Karen Filippelli
- Idris Elba as Charles Miner
- Kathy Bates as Jo Bennet
- Will Ferrell as Deangelo Vickers
When Will The Office Reboot Be On TV?
The Office reboot is very much in its early stages, with official casting still yet to take place and filming therefore a long way off. At the earliest, we could see the reboot on screens in mid 2025 – but there’s no way of knowing just yet. We will update this page when we know more.
