Everyone’s talking about The Teacher, an explosive Channel 5 drama that just wrapped up for series 2. So, can we expect more? And where can we stream it if we missed it on TV? We’ve got all the details.

The Teacher: Plot, Cast & Where To Watch

The Teacher – not to be confused with A Teacher (2020), Hulu’s American drama series starring Kate Mara and Nick Robinson and, admittedly, covering similar themes – is a psychological thriller starring Sheridan Smith as Jenna Garvey, an English teacher with a chaotic personal life accused of having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old pupil. It originally aired on Channel 5 in January 2022, but most of its audience has come from Netflix, where the four-part series is also available to stream.

The series wraps up quite neatly, so you might be surprised to hear that there’s a second series available to watch now, too. Here’s what to expect.

What Is The Teacher About?

Now an anthology series, The Teacher is a psychological drama centered around a secondary school called Earlbridge School. The first series follows Jenna (Sheridan Smith), an English teacher accused of having sexual intercourse with an underage pupil. The surprise second series returns to Earlbridge, but Jenna does not appear. Instead, we centre on Dani (Kara Tointon), a dedicated art teacher ‘who loves her job’ – and whose life is put into a tailspin after a student’s death is revealed to be a murder.

The official synopsis describes Dani as ‘a mentor and inspiration to her students, but what she lacks is a properly functioning marriage with real intimacy and mutual desire. This leads her into an impulsive affair with a fellow colleague that at first answers all her needs, but soon spirals out of control.

‘When a pupil goes missing on a school trip,’ the synopsis continues, ‘Dani rightly blames herself for being too easily distracted. When things take a sinister turn, she is forced to lie, and quickly finds her life falling to pieces. She risks everything to right the wrongs that she has, in part, been responsible for.’

Will There Be A Series 3?

No news just yet but, after an unlikely second series, we think The Teacher series 3 is very possible. Describing series 2, Channel 5 writes: ‘The series forms part of an Anthology collection, following the incredibly successful psychological thriller The Teacher, which aired in 2022.’ Channel 5 continues to share that it is the channel’s largest commissioned drama with regards to share of viewing, remaining My5’s most streamed drama ever. We therefore expect a third instalment to follow a third teacher in hot water at a secondary school, probably to be released in 2025.
