What's the hype behind this dark police drama?
Gritty crime series True Detective is everywhere at the moment following the divisive finale of its fourth series. Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology crime TV drama first debuted back in 2014 to much critical acclaim, with three equally popular seasons to follow, including the fourth back in January this year. But if you’re yet to dive in, it’s not too late. Here’s everything you need to know about HBO’s mega-hit.
True Detective: Everything You Need To Know
What Is True Detective About?
Each eight-episode series of True Detective follows a different mystery and police organisation, with a new set of cast and characters. The stories tend to be dark, with a focus on strange and difficult cases, exploring different genres of police procedures – and the troubled detectives in the force.
Season one centres around a pair of homicide detectives, who delve into the case of a ritualistic serial killer whose crimes they first encountered 17 years ago. Told through a non-linear narrative, this one features the iconic casting duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
The second season is set in the city of Vinci, following the interwoven stories of several police officers, opening with the murder of city planner Ben Caspere.
Season three takes place in the Ozarks across three time periods, with two detectives investigating a macabre crime drama involving two missing children.
Titled True Detective: Night Country, the most recent series takes the action to Alaska, where a pair of detectives are solving a mysterious disappearance during a long winter night.
Who Is In The Cast of True Detective?
With an entirely new cast each season, a whole host of famous faces have starred in True Detective. In season one, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson give a brilliant performance as detective duo Rust Cohle and Martin Hart respectively. McConaughey spoke about the monumental effect the series had on him. ‘I’m seeing my life through a different lens. A lens that was opened up and an aperture that was opened up through Rustin Cohle,’ he said, adding: ‘I was as strong spiritually with my relationship with God when I did True Detective as I’ve ever been.’
Season two was equally star-studded, featuring names like Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. In season three, the cast included figures like Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher.
The fourth season sees Hollywood star Jodie Foster taking on her first major TV role in years as detective Liz Danvers. She features alongside Kali Reis, John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston and Isabella LaBlanc.
Will There Be A True Detective Season 5?
It has been confirmed that True Detective will return for a fifth season, which will be overseen by True Detective: Night Country showrunner Issa López. That’s all the information we have so far.
