With Brian Cox recently declaring cinema is in ‘a very bad way’, We Live In Time is a glimmer of hope slicing through the superhero noise. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as the leading couple, this upcoming film is a decades-spanning flick described by A24 as a rom com – but we think it looks like a real tear jerker.

It just debuted at the London Film Festival – with Garfield bringing a Pugh cut-out along with him, since filming conflicts mean she couldn’t make it – but when can we expect We Live In Time to land in cinemas? Here’s everything you need to know.

Starring Brits Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh using their native English accents, We Live In Time is something to really get excited about. Set and filmed in London, it’s a rom com centred on Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh), who fall in love after a not-so-meet-cute: Almut hits Tobias with her car, and he wakes up to meet her in hospital. Written by Olivier Award winning writer Nick Payne, here’s what to expect.

What Is We Live In Time About?

Almut and Tobias are brought together by a chance encounter: she hits him with her car. But this life-changing event happens for the better. The duo falls into a deep, all-encompassing love, falling for each other, building a home together, becoming a family. But then a difficult truth rocks their foundation, and they must embark on a path challenged by the limits of time, cherishing every moment of their unconventional life together.

Told in snapshots by filmmaker John Crowley (who also directed Brooklyn [2015] and The Goldfinch [2019]), we see snippets of Almut and Tobias’ life together across a decade in a style reminiscent of fan favourite, About Time. At once heartwarming and heartbreaking, We Live In Time is a love story all about the times that change us and the times that make us.

We Live in Time was filmed in south London in April 2023, with production spotted in Herne Hill, Brockwell Park and Blackfen.

We Live In Time will be released in the UK on 1 January 2025. It was released in the US release on 11 October 2024 after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September 2024.
