The countdown is on for the fifth and final season of Netflix's hit stalker-murderer drama, YOU. Here's what you need to know

How is Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) still getting away with it all? Well, it seems YOU season 5 – the big finale – spells the murdering bookseller’s downfall. Here’s everything the brand new trailer teases about what’s in store.

Here’s What The YOU Season 5 Trailer Reveals

We’re Back In New York City

…But we’re a world away from season 1. ‘Hello, you,’ the trailer opens. ‘You’re back in the greatest city in the world thanks to the one person who could make it possible.’ Joe now operates in high society thanks to his marriage with Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie). Because of her family’s notoriety at the top of the TR Lockwood Corporation, our former elusive killer finds himself thrust into the spotlight – and the flashing lights of paparazzi cameras.

‘Fame definitely took a bit of getting used to,’ Joe tells us in his voiceover. ‘But to live happily ever after, you have to bury your old self.’ But of course, the truth will always come to light…

Joe Is Struggling To Bury His Dark Side

Joe is back working at Mooney’s it seems – the bookshop he managed in season 1, and the site of his meet-cute with Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Wistful images of Beck and Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) flash on screen, followed by a less-nostalgic, more-haunting flashback of Love (Victoria Pedretti) attempting to kill Joe – and our bloodthirsty protagonist striking back. It’s safe to say there’s a bit of trauma there, but could it be that Joe misses the thrill?

‘You have a great life,’ he narrates. ‘It’s just not worth the risk.’ But, as always, the temptation is too much for Joe to resist…

New Season, New Love Interest

What would YOU be without Joe crushing on a new girl? In season 5, there’s a new redhead on the block, bringing us full circle to the love interest at the very beginning of Joe’s trauma, red-headed Candace (Ambyr Childers).

In the dark of night, there’s a break in at the bookshop. Joe grabs an Emily Dickinson bust by the throat, and gets ready to swing at the assailant. Meet Bronte (Madeline Brewer), an enigmatic, free-spirited playwright who captures Joe’s attention.

…And His Crimes Are Coming To Light

‘They’ve made me the most visible man in New York,’ Joe voices over a newspaper splash starring his image and the words ‘Joe Goldmurder: Humanitarian or Homicidal Maniac?’. It seems YOU season 5’s big drama will be a Joe exposé – fuelled by social media, no less. Think true crime girlies taking to TikTok to theorise on Joe Goldberg’s murky history – plus some old faces coming out of the woodwork.

‘That psycho absolutely killed my best friend Peach,’ says Annika Atwater (Kathryn Gallagher), who stars in Peach’s (Shay Mitchell) coterie in season 1. The screen also flashes to a scene of Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) locked up in prison for the crime Joe framed her for in season 4: murdering her boyfriend Edward (Brad Alexander). Nadia bears a large brunt all thanks to Joe, so we’re sure her testimony will play a part in his comeuppance.

The Lockwood Family Is Catching On

Of course, Joe’s sudden notoriety doesn’t go unnoticed by those close to him – including the Lockwood family. ‘Kate, you are not safe,’ a family member says as he comforts the wealthy heiress. ‘Who did you marry?’ But of course, Kate has a solid idea of who she married: she helped Joe cover up his murder of Rhys (Ed Speleers), and is probably aware Joe played a part in the death of his wife, Love, too.

But how much does she actually know? ‘You led me to believe you could love all of me,’ Joe says later in the trailer. And before that, when Joe says, ‘There isn’t a line I wouldn’t cross to protect this family,’ Kate replies with incredulity: ‘You want us to kill everyone who is suspicious of us for the rest of our lives?’

‘Is that so wrong, if it’s for the right reasons?’ Joe retorts. Of course, we know the answer is yes – but could Netflix be hinting Kate is the operator of Joe’s downfall?

The Return Of The Glass Box

The secret glass box in the basement of Mooney’s is an iconic feature of YOU: it’s where Joe takes his victims to hold them hostage in NYC, and he is so fond of the installation he builds another in LA and London. While we don’t know who he is talking to, in the YOU season 5 trailer, we see Joe backdropped by the glass box and surrounding basement bookshelves at Mooney’s as he says ‘At heart, I am a normal guy.’ Who are you trying to convince, Joe?
