Chinese Arts Now Festival

January 19 2019 - February 2 2019

Chinese Arts Now

What?

The first arts festival in the UK dedicated to British-Chinese performance and culture is taking place across London until 2 February. Over 60 events will be happening across London, including theatre, dance, music, film, live art performances and augmented reality, with the aim of raising the representation of Chinese artists in the UK.

Performance highlights include Citizens of Nowhere: a drama about a British Chinese family, and Lao Can Impression: a unique performance which fuses the music of Debussy with a dramatic adaptation of the classic story The Travels of Lao Can by the acclaimed Chinese writer Liu. Meanwhile Love Songs is a combination of dance music, rap and spoken word; and Red Ink features contemporary dance, break and hip-hop dancing. At the Chinese Visual Festival (23-31 January), two of the most acclaimed Chinese documentaries of the past year will be showcased: Zheng Qiong’s A Way Out, following three teenagers from different socio-economic backgrounds over six years, and Xiao Xiao’s Turtle Rock, depicting life in a remote mountainous village. Global Soundscapes sees Belle Chen performing a one-of-a-kind programme which integrates classical music, soundscapes and electronics to recreate locations from around the world, from Istanbul to Indonesia.

Founded in 2005 as a not-for-profit arts organisation, Chinese Arts Now (CAN) is the first National Portfolio Organisation supported by the Arts Council England representing British Chinese artists.
