The World’s 50 Best Bars 2019 Have Been Revealed
London's bar scene has put in a strong showing

Although London was knocked off the top spot, ten of the capital’s bars were named in the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards, announced last week.
This year’s winner was Dante in New York, which jumped eight places to replace London’s Dandelyan – which closed shortly after striking gold at the 2018 awards. It was followed by the Connaught Bar at Mayfair hotel The Connaught, with Florería Atlántico in Buenos Aires coming third.

Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, Dante opened in 1915 as Caffé Dante. In 2015, it was taken over by Australian couple Linden Pride and Natalie Hudson, who revamped the space into an Italian-style aperitivo bar. ‘We could not be more honored to be named number one World’s Best Bar at the most prestigious of awards ceremony here in London,’ Pride said in a statement. ‘Since taking over the historical Dante space in 2015, we strive to deliver a truly special and innovative experience to our guests, from New York City and around the world.’

Mayfair’s glamorous Connaught Bar, meanwhile, was honoured for its faultless service and ceremoniously served Martinis (quietly stirred, never shaken). Other London entries which made the list include Kwãnt at number 47, the new venture from former Savoy bartender Erik Lorincz which opened just five months ago. Hoxton’s Happiness Forgets, Bethnal Green’s Coupette, and the famous Artesian at The Langham also featured, alongside Dandelyan’s replacement: Lyaness, opened by famed cocktail guru Ryan Chetiyawardana. American Bar at The Savoy dropped from second to fifth in this year’s ranking – though it did win Legend of the List.

Now in its 11th edition, The World’s 50 Best Bars Awards are voted for by over 500 drinks experts from around the world. This year’s list features 15 new entries, covering a diverse range of bars from 26 cities across 21 countries.
