Ultra gooey goodness awaits

Craving something hearty? We’d argue that the ultimate lunchtime treat is a good toastie, stuffed with cheese (if there’s no cheese pull, what’s the point?) and any other fillings you fancy. When the munchies become too much to bear, swing by one of these London eateries – where you’re guaranteed to find some of the best toasties in town.

Where To Find The Best Toasties In London

Deeney’s

Bringing the flavours of Scotland to East London, Deeney’s started out as a small stall on Broadway Market where it became famous for its flavourful toasties. It’s The Macbeth, Deeney’s signature haggis toastie (served up with cheddar, rocket, caramelised onions and mustard) that really steals the show – but rest assured, if haggis isn’t your thing, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of vegan and veggie options to try as well.

Dishoom

As anyone who has been to Dishoom will know, it is a restaurant that knows how to make rich flavours sing – and the trend continues when it comes to toasties. While not the typical grilled cheese you’d expect, Dishoom’s Chilli Cheese Toast is well worth detouring for. The Bombay-inspired dish consists of green chillies, capsicum and garlic in cheddar melt on a white sliced loaf (no sandwiching here, but no one’s looking if you want to smush the bread slices together yourself). Pop in for breakfast to try the Kejriwal, which serves up fried eggs on the famed Chilli Cheese Toast, for a real kickstart to your morning.

The Wigmore

Elevated British pub fare is the star of the menu at The Wigmore, with dishes overseen by Michel Roux Jr. and packed with seasonal ingredients from quality producers. The Wigmore is also home to the XXL toastie, a giant sandwich stuffed with three cheeses and mustard. Perfect for sharing amongst friends, if you can bring yourself to part with a few slices.

The Cheese Bar

Cheese fiends will no doubt be familiar with The Cheese Bar, London’s network of turophilic foodie venues. Whether you choose to venture to its flagship in Camden Market, the Pick & Cheese conveyor belt in Convent Garden or The Cheese Barge in Paddington, know that you’ll be treated to some seriously gooey goodness wherever you go.

Kappacasein Dairy

Any Borough Market foodie tour isn’t complete without a trip to Kappacasein Dairy, arguably home to London’s most famous toastie. Served up hot from a market stall, Kappacasein fill their toasties with cheeses sourced from an organic farm on Bore Place estate in Kent. There’s only one toastie on the menu (no need to mess with a classic, right?), comprised of a cheese mix topped with a sprinkling of onions and leeks – all packed between two slice of Polaine sourdough.
