Every year on 5 May, thousands of people around the world mark Cinco de Mayo, a vibrant celebration of Mexican culture. Introduced to commemorate the date of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, the event is particularly big in Mexico and the US, where it’s celebrated with colourful parades and mariachi music. Sweeties at The Standard London

The Standard hotel always throws a good party, so you can guarantee its Cinco de Mayo events will be fun. Famed Parisian speakeasy and taqueria Candelaria is hosting a two-part residency at the venue, kicking off with a party at rooftop bar Sweeties, complete with tacos and cocktails. On Saturday, the hotel’s Spanish-Mexican restaurant Decimo is launching a new brunch menu, featuring traditional Mexican dishes and music from a live band.

Oriole

Covent Garden speakeasy Oriole is throwing a Cinco de Mayo party complete with Mexican dishes, cocktails and live music. Throughout the afternoon, guests can enjoy specials like Taco Al Pastor, tacos topped with Iberico and pineapple kimchi, and Crab Chilaquiles, corn totopos with crab, avocado and salsa verde, followed by dulce de leche for dessert. Alongside this, bartender Samet Ali has created three special cocktails, including the Jungle Bird, a concoction of Volcan Blanco Tequila, Aperol and elderflower liqueur.

Perched atop the Treehouse Hotel, Madera offers impressive views of the city, alongside Mexican-inspired fare. This Cinco de Mayo, the restaurant is collaborating with El Rayo Tequila on a special pop-up, complete with sharing palomas and Cali-Mexican brunch dishes, like fajita bowls, fluffy beef buns with chipotle mayo, and waffles with berries and vanilla cream.

Chic New Orleans-inspired dining room Louie London is throwing a Latin American-inspired fiesta this weekend. Cinco de Mayo festivities are running throughout the weekend at The Bloomsbury hotel. Its two bars, The Coral Room and The Bloomsbury Club, have partnered with Volcan Tequila to host a Mexican-inspired pop-up, with live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Special drinks range from a classic spicy margarita to the Melon and Bergamot, a mix of Volcan Blanco, Italicus, Supsawa and melon. Can’t choose? Corrochio’s

A buzzy Mexican-inspired bar and taqueria in Stoke Newington bar, Corrochio’s is a great place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. On Sunday, the restaurant is hosting a Mexican-inspired barbecue featuring volcanes (crispy grilled tortillas with cheese), alongside a mariachi band and margarita slushies. Then, on Monday, guests can book brunch, with dishes on offer including aguachiles (butterflied prawns in spicy lime juice) and torta ahogada (a crispy baguette topped with pickled onions and filled with pork carnitas or halloumi).
