What Are Baked Oats?
Porridge – made by cooking oats with milk or water – has been eaten for breakfast for hundreds of years, all over the world. But recently, social media has gone crazy for a new way of utilising oats: making the usual mixture, then baking it. Perfect for those who object to the texture of porridge, baked oats are simple to make and can be jazzed up in all sorts of ways, from adding fruit and nut butters to blending in spices.

Are They Healthy?
Although baked oats feel – and often look like – a treat you might find in your local cake shop, this breakfast dish offers plenty of nutritional benefits. Oats are a source of slow-release carbohydrate, meaning they keep you fuller for longer, and these benefits remain if the grains are baked. They’re also packed with fibre and beta-glucans, which helps build a strong immune system.
Just like with porridge, though, your choice of toppings is important. Nutritionists often recommend adding things like seeds or nut butter to up the protein content, plus fruit such as berries or apples to get some vitamin C involved.
