These new chocolate buns are a must-try

M&S’s Easter collection is better than ever this year. First its giant custard cream chocolate egg went viral, and now everyone is raving about its dippy egg hot cross buns: a twist on the traditional spring bake. Since launching in stores last week, TikTok is awash with taste test videos, and the general consensus is positive, with users deeming them ‘insane’, ‘moreish’ and ‘perfect’.

M&S Launches Dippy Egg Hot Cross Buns

As the name suggests, the new buns are inspired by the classic dippy eggs breakfast, which involves dipping toast soldiers in runny yolk. But don’t worry, there are no real eggs here: instead the soft cocoa hot cross buns are filled with a sweet centre, made using white chocolate, reminiscent of a creme egg.

M&S’ Dippy Egg Filled Hot Cross Buns join a range of 12 different varieties of hot cross buns. Also new to stores for 2025 are the Eat 6 Cinn-A-Yum Buns, a hybrid between a hot cross bun and a cinnamon roll, topped with white icing and cinnamon sugar.

Other favourites include the Extremely Lemony Curd Filled Hot Cross Buns, which have a zingy lemon curd filling, and the Mini Millionaire’s Hot Cross Buns, which are studded with salted caramel fudge pieces and chocolate chips. Fans of a savoury bun, meanwhile, will love the Extremely Cheesy Cheddar and Red Leicester Hot Cross Buns. There are also vegan and gluten-free hot cross buns.

The launch comes as M&S celebrates 50 years of its beloved hot cross buns, which the store has been perfecting since 1975. The retailer has certainly got something right: apparently, during the peak Easter season 32 buns are sold every second.

Although sold throughout the year, hot cross buns have long been associated with Easter. In Christianity, the cross symbolises the crucifixion of Jesus before his resurrection on Easter Sunday. A 12-century monk, Thomas Rocliffe from St Albans, is often credited with creating the earliest bun (known then as the Alban bun), made with flour, eggs, yeast, currants and spiced. Imprinted with a cross using a knife, the buns were allegedly distributed to those in need at the gates of St Alban’s Abbey from 1361.
