Life Kitchen is working on recipes and holding cookery classes to help those living with cancer to experience the comfort and delight of flavour again.
Duck & Waffle Host Cookery Course for Chemotherapy Patients
About 80% of people undergoing chemotherapy find that the treatment robs them of their ability to taste, making food unpalatable. Ryan Riley founded Life Kitchen to return the joy of food to the lives of chemo patients with the help of pioneering research from Professor Barry Smith of the University of London – an authority in taste and the senses. Ryan Riley founded this charity initiative in memory of his mother, Krista, who, at just 47, lost her battle against small-cell lung cancer four years ago.
Life Kitchen is a cause close to Duck & Waffle executive chef Tom Cenci’s heart. The restaurant will be hosting a series of Life Kitchen cookery classes on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower.
‘The work that Ryan and Life Kitchen do is amazing, and we are very excited to be a part of it. Life Kitchen help people suffering with cancer to experience the pleasure of food again, and here at Duck & Waffle we are always experimenting with exciting flavour combinations, so it feels like such a great fit. We can’t wait to welcome the first students to Duck & Waffle’ – Tom Cenci.
The Life Kitchen cookery classes at Duck & Waffle started on 7 August; the next one is on 19 September and ongoing from then. Classes are free of charge, but spaces are limited to twelve people: six people who are currently undergoing treatment plus a guest each. To book a place, email [email protected].
Tom Cenci and Life Kitchen are also introducing a collaborative dish to the Duck & Waffle menu: a spiced duck doughnut with charred pineapple jam. The specially designed dish takes inspiration from the signature Duck & Waffle doughnut combined with the famous pineapple tacos from the Life Kitchen classes. Profits from the dish will go to help fund future Life Kitchen classes.
