Swap wine for eggs in this trending dish

We’re all well-acquainted with wine flights – a fancy name for a selection of wines served in small portions. But what about an egg flight? Say hello to TikTok’s newest viral craze, a fun new breakfast or post-gym snack for egg lovers.

What Is An Egg Flight?

An egg flight is a twist on the traditional deviled egg dish. Instead of the laborious process of removing the yolks, hard-boiled eggs are cut in half and topped with an array of condiments and toppings, then presented in a line-up akin to a wine or beer flight.

It’s the brainchild of content creator Alice Choi, known as @hipfoodiemom1 on TikTok, who has racked up 1.5 million views for her egg flight video. She tops her boiled egg halves with Japanese mayonnaise (an essential ingredient to glue down the toppings, according to Choi) and Dijon mustard, then adds toppings like kimchi, jalapenos, pickled red onions and hot honey.

Although the trend has taken off this summer, the egg flight has been a gradual evolution in Choi’s cooking. She has been creating hard-boiled, topped egg snacks since 2022 – but recently, a follower suggested calling it an ‘egg flight’ and her viral creation followed.

‘I think this caught on because it’s like making a deviled egg but much easier,’ says Choi, ‘You don’t have to mess with removing the yolks, mixing them with mayo and mustard and then piping it back into the egg white.’ Ultimately, it’s just a fun way to enjoy eggs – you can jazz them up with whatever you have in the fridge.

How To Make An Egg Flight

This recipe is nice and simple, and can be tailored to your individual tastes.

  1. Begin by boiling your eggs. The right boiling time depends on how you like them, but typically 10 to 12 minutes allows the yolk and white to fully cook through. If you prefer the soft-boiled taste, you can cook them for a shorter time (usually between six and eight minutes).
  2. Once they are cooked, slice the eggs in half.
  3. Add your toppings of choice – TikTok is full of ideas including cheese, pickles, hot sauce, croutons and more (Choi warns against overloading your eggs, though).
  4. Finally, arrange them on a tray or plate for maximum aesthetic effect. And voila: you have your egg flight. Fun, nutritious, and with no hangover the next morning.
