Bollinger and sausage rolls? We're in

Oysters, seafood platters, cheeseboards: these are the kinds of foods you might expect to see served with champagne. But how about sausage rolls? The unlikely pairing is the focus of an upcoming Christmas pop-up bar from no-frills bakery Greggs.

This Quirky Pop-Up Will Serve Champagne And Sausage Rolls

Arriving in the Newcastle branch of Fenwick from 24 October until the end of December, the champagne bar is said to be ‘inspired by 1920s Paris wine bars’ with an Art Nouveau look. With space for 16 customers, guests will be encouraged to ring vintage crystal bells for a glass of fizz, with bottles ranging from a £10 glass of Ca’ di Alte Prosecco to a £75 glass of Louis Roederer Cristal – also available by the bottle for £425.

There will also be cocktails inspired by Greggs’ signature treats, such as a ‘pink jammie fizz’, an ode to the bakery’s jam doughnuts, and a ‘yum yum twist’ crafted with real yum yums.

The food menu has been created by Fenwick executive head chef Mark Reid in collaboration with Greggs, featuring classic bakes jazzed up with ‘in vogue’ condiments. There’s a steak bake served with peppercorn aioli, for instance, and a sausage, bean and cheese melt with Bloody Mary ketchup. Of course sausage rolls feature too, served here with some on-trend hot honey chilli sauce.

This follows last year’s French dining experience, Bistro Greggs, which was also hosted at Fenwicks, and saw visitors served steak bakes under a silver cloche.

Hannah Squirrell, customer director at Greggs, said: ‘While Champagne and Greggs might not be the most immediate food and drink pairing, following the success and reaction to our Greggs Bistro last year, we’re excited for the launch of the Greggs Champagne Bar at Fenwick. Hopefully everyone who visited us last year, and many more, will enjoy the fun and unique experience that’s been created and discover that a chilled glass of champagne accompanied by a sausage roll will be the hottest ticket in Toon for 2024.’

Leo Fenwick, strategic partnerships director at Fenwick, said: “After the phenomenal success of last year’s Bistro Greggs at Fenwick, we are proud to once again partner with the fellow North East icon Greggs, to launch Greggs Champagne Bar at Fenwick, offering a fun and truly unique customer experience.

‘This pop-up enhances our growing restaurant offer which continues to evolve through unexpected collaborations and new concepts bringing customers a truly memorable in-store dining experience.’

The champagne bar will open daily from 11.30am from 24 October until the end of December 2024 at Fenwick Newcastle. fenwick.co.uk
