This hearty sandwich is the perfect WFH lunch

Move over Pret: looks like we’ll all be making our own sandwiches this year. TikTok’s latest culinary obsession is the grinder sandwich, an Italian-style bread roll packed to the brim with fillings. Keen to give it a whirl? Here’s how to make the viral recipe.

What Is The Grinder Sandwich?

While it may look like TikTok invented the dish, the grinder sandwich has actually been around for a long time. The grinder sandwich seems to have its roots in North America, with the name referring to the effort required to chew down the jam-packed sub. Typically, the sandwich is made on a long Italian-style bread roll with a crusty exterior, then filled with a variety of meats, cheese, lettuce and veggies. TikTok’s version is usually made with a tangy salad, with lots of freshly grated parmesan.

Recipe: The Grinder Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ⅓ cup sliced cherry peppers or banana peppers
  • Handful of parsley
  • Some fresh parmesan cheese
  • Pepper
  • ½ small head of iceberg lettuce
  • 1 large tomato
  • ¼ medium red onion
  • Canned hot peppers
  • A few slices of parma ham and salami (or other charcuterie meats)
  • A few slices of Provolone cheese
  • 1 large Italian-style bread roll

Method:

  1. Start by making the salad dressing. In a bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, red wine vinegar and cherry peppers, then add the Italian seasoning, parsley and some freshly grated parmesan cheese. Season with lots of pepper.
  2. Chop the iceberg lettuce into ribbons, and slice the red onion.
  3. Mix the dressing with the salad until well combined.
  4. Cut the bread roll in half lengthways, leaving it attached on one side. Layer it with the Provolone cheese and meats – plus a bit more grated Parmesan if you fancy.
  5. Add the salad mixture to the sandwich.
  6. Slice in half and enjoy!
