What’s On by C&TH gets the inside scoop from London Wine Week Director, Emma Murphy…
An officially sanctioned excuse to ‘sample’ copious amounts of wine – need we say more? London Wine Week returns from 14 – 20 May, and with it events across the city from pop-up wine bars to al fresco parties and guided tastings. Seven days are sadly not enough to try all of the bespoke tasting flights at 125 of the best wine bars in town, so we’ve called upon festival Director Emma Murphy to help us out, as she chooses her top 10 London Wine Week events to make sure you’ve got in your diary.
Emma is passionate about making wine more accessible and encouraging people to discover and taste wines they might not have come across before. Emma launched the first ever London Wine Week back in 2014 and as a self-proclaimed ‘wine expert’, who better to provide the ultimate insider’s guide? Check out Emma’s top picks for celebrating wine the right way…
Do your homework… These are the Wine Trends of 2018
Wine Tours
A wonderful way to taste and learn about wine courtesy of the best sommeliers in town! There are so many wines I’d love to try that a week just isn’t long enough – so get started! Find out more here
Royal Wedding
With fortuitous timing, it seemed only right to celebrate the most talked-about occasion of the year with a party. Any excuse for fizz and cake! 19 May, more details here
Berry Bros & Rudd Pop Up
This is the first time legendary wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd have ‘popped up’ and we’re delighted it’s for London Wine Week. I’m looking forward to tasting what they have in store for us. 15 & 16 May, more details here
The Rogue Terrace
Back by popular demand! Last year, Regal Rogue joined us at Oval Space and they really brought the fun… Disco and funky tunes, vermouth cocktails and rogueish behaviour make for an unforgettable party. 18-20 May, more details here
5 of the Best Hotels for English Wine
COYA
This is the treat of the week. The food at COYA Mayfair is exceptional and the opportunity to have it paired with wines from the Loire is definitely something to snap up. £75, more details here
Wright Bros
Who doesn’t love wine and oysters? They are a popular and timeless match for a reason. And who better to teach you the best way to shuck and prepare your oysters than the best merchants in London! £30, more details here
Closing Party
Iconic Bedales of Borough is closing for a refurb for a few months. They have lots of wine to clear from the cellars and as it falls on the final day of London Wine Week, we thought it only appropriate to help them with this task by joining forces to host a big bash to see them out. 20 May, more details here
Renegade
I’m a huge fan of Renegade and what they’re doing. The winery there is a great space to drink wines and soak up their enthusiasm – so with an Australian legend coming over to join them for a day, it’s a must-attend event on my list. 19 May, more details here
Pol Roger Lodge
Much like Berry Bros & Rudd, this is the first time Pol Roger are popping up so it’s a rare treat. They have a great set-up and jeroboams of Champagne for sundowners as well as a huge range of their still wines – it’s going to be a highlight of the Hub. 15-20 May, more details here
Wine Art at Hub
It’s not often you get to see live art painting with wine! Edgar’s work is exceptional and so unique, he’ll be creating a new work each day so you can see it come to life. Find out more here
