The truth behind the viral pie
Since buying a farm in Chipping Norton, Jeremy Clarkson has sparked various controversies in the local area, from battles with the council over the launch of a restaurant to complaints over traffic on the surrounding streets. And now the former Top Gear presenter has come under fire again – but this time, it’s all over a pork pie, which is rumoured to be on sale for £200 at his Cotswolds pub, The Farmer’s Dog.
The Jeremy Clarkson Pork Pie Debacle, Explained
Reports of the £200 pie arose last week following an Instagram video posted by user @theskepticstake, which shared a video from inside the venue – complete with a less than glowing review. ‘I went to Jeremy Clarkson’s pub and farm shop so you don’t have to,’ he said. ‘A place where you pay £2 to park in a muddy field, and choose from the array of overpriced souvenirs that will end up in your bin.’ The video also showed the pie in question, along with the price tag, describing it as ‘enough pie to throw at your neighbour for 200 quid.’
Clarkson has since responded to the claims, revealing that the pie on display is in fact not edible. On 24 January, Clarkson posted on X to declare: ‘There are reports in some of the sillier newspapers that the enormous pork pie is for sale at the Farmer’s Dog for £200. You’re welcome to buy it for that, but I wouldn’t recommend eating it. As it’s not made of food.’
So if not meat, what’s actually inside the pie? Straw, apparently. In a post on The Farmer’s Dog’s Instagram, the captain reads: ‘This now infamous £200 pork pie is actually made of straw!’
However, it seems The Farmer’s Dog does indeed sell made-to-order pies which can cost up to £199.99, if the video is anything to go by. The team at The Farmer’s Dog defended the price of these, writing on Instagram: ‘Because the real giant pies we make fresh to order for our customers with the best British farmed ingredients and to whatever size you want – great value for as many people as you want to cater for..and so delicious that our Steak and Hawkstone Pie is now entered in the most prestigious pie competition in the country – watch this space for results!’
There are also regular sized pies on offer for takeaway, which we see a customer buying in the video.

Clarkson opened The Farmer’s Dog in August 2024. Housed in a 15th century barn, the pub spotlights food grown on British farms, including some grown at Diddly Squat down the road. The menu includes dishes like gammon steak with bubble and squeak, sausages of the day and a Sunday carvery, alongside beer from Clarkson’s own brand, Hawkstone, and Clarkson’s girlfriend Lisa Hogan‘s sparkling wine.
The pub will likely be a storyline in series four of Clarkson’s Farm, the hit Prime show which is rumoured to be hitting screens this spring.
