Fermented food is in the spotlight at this day-long festival
With gut health front and centre of the wellness conversation right now, kimchi is one of the trendiest foods around – so much so that there’s a whole festival dedicated to it. The Kimchi Festival London is returning to the capital for its third year running, featuring chef demonstrations, talks and of course plenty of the dish in question.
Kimchi Festival London: What To Expect
Taking place at St Bride Foundation in London’s Fleet Street Quarter, the festival sees 18 of the world’s top kimchi chefs coming together for a day of food, fermentation and discussion. Names like Sook Ja Yoon, Heeyehn Kim and Jeongmi Kim will be providing their expert tips on mastering kimchi, with interactive workshops allowing guests to have a go themselves.
Alongside the food, the day will celebrate traditional Korean culture. There will be music from the London Korean Hummingbird Choir, a Samulnori performance (a style of percussion), and at 5pm, festival goers can take part in the K-POP Random Play Dance. Guests can also listen to talks with the chefs, and browse the craft and food sales in the courtyard. Plus don’t miss the raffle, where you could win a return flight to South Korea.
What Is Kimchi?
A staple of Korean cuisine, kimchi is made from fermented vegetables, most often Napa cabbage, alongside ingredients like gochugaru, garlic, ginger, salt and soy or fish sauce. The vegetables are salted and brined, then fermented with a lactic acid bacteria culture.
Fermented foods like kimchi are renowned for their health benefits. They are packed with gut-friendly bacteria, which helps improve digestion and reduce inflammation, as well as strengthening your immune system.
When Is Kimchi Festival London 2024?
