What's the hype around the Herne Hill eatery?
One of the most hotly anticipated films of the moment, We Live In Time lands in cinemas on New Year’s Day. Starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, it tells the story of Almut and Tobias, a London couple who fall in love after an unlikely meet-cute: Almut hitting Tobias with her car. The movie takes place in the south-east London neighbourhood of Herne Hill, and locals will recognise many of its settings – from leafy Brockwell Park to the station. But where do Almut and Tobias fall in love? Turns out one of the film’s most significant filming locations is a wine bar called Lulu’s, which you can visit now.
Inside Herne Hill Hotspot Lulu’s
It’s no surprise director John Crowley chose Lulu’s as a key setting for his love story: this tiny venue is one of London’s most romantic spots. Opened in 2022 as a younger sister to revered eatery Llewelyn’s, Lulu’s serves coffees, pastries and deli goods in the day before transforming into a cosy wine bar for the evening, complete with a selection of modern European small plates.
The menu changes weekly, but at the moment you’ll find nibbles like Maldon oysters, olives and preserved lemon focaccia, alongside larger dishes including mauve aubergine with muhammara and pomegranate, suckling pig chop and beetroot cavatelli. Plates can be paired with wines from a considered list, alongside a couple of cocktail options (currently there’s an olive oil martini or a negroni).
@food_feelsA favourite new wine bar in London. Lulu’s in Herne Hill 🍷
It’s quite the date night spot, with friendly staff and an easy-going, European feel. Inside you’ll find a scattering of candlelit high tables and stools, with a few outdoor tables spilling onto the pavement for when the weather plays ball. Diners can also take some bits and bobs home with them: Lulu’s also stocks an abundance of local goodies like cheese, pasta and chocolate.
With space for less than 20 people inside, tables are like hotcakes on weekend evenings – and no doubt will be even trickier to nab after Lulu’s makes its screen debut, so get in there quickly. We can’t guarantee you’ll meet the love of your life, but you will get some great food and wine.
