Bank-breaking menus from all over the globe
While you do find those rare steals offering top-class food at low prices, most Michelin-starred eateries come at a price. But which ones will set you back the most? A new list put together by international food magazine Chef’s Pencil has revealed the world’s most expensive Michelin-starred restaurants.
Priciest Michelin-Starred Restaurants Of 2024
The list was created by analysing the prices of over 3,500 Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, focusing on regular menus rather than special celebratory offerings, such as Christmas or New Year’s Eve. All prices are per person (and rounded for simplicity), and most do not include drinks, although some do.
Topping the ranking is Ginza Kitafuku in Tokyo, one of the best crab specialists in Japan, where the Echizen Crab Kiwami Course will set you back a whopping $2,130 USD (around £1,687). Here fresh live crab is served right in front of diners’ eyes, presented in a variety of different ways – from sashimi to grilled to boiled.
Echizen crab is a premium type of fish caught exclusively off the coast of Echizen in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Ginza Kitafuku’s menu focuses on an even rarer variety: Kiwami, which must meet very strict criteria for weight and size – and typical costs between 70,000 and 80,000 Yen (roughly £400).

The second most expensive is Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet, a unique restaurant in Shanghai with just one table seating 10 diners. Housed in a secret location and described as an ‘immersive dining experience’, it takes guests on a culinary journey featuring theatrics, music, graphics and of course excellent food. There are three menu options on offer, but the most expensive offering will set you back $1,230 USD (approximately £974) in one sitting – although this price does include champagne, wine and cocktail pairings.
The third and fourth restaurants in the list are both in New York: Caviar Russe on Madison Avenue, and Masa, located in The Shops at Columbus Circle. As the name suggests, the first specialises in caviar, with a decadent 11-course tasting menu that costs $975 USD (around £813), while Masa is a renowned sushi counter and dining room run by chef Masaoshi ‘Masa’ Takayama. Its Hinoki Counter Experience features an abundance of luxury ingredients, such as Ossetra caviar and truffle.
