A Spanish twist on the festive staple

Looking for a twist on the classic mulled wine, but can’t get on board with the white variety? Try this alternative: mulled sangria, which sees the festive tipple given a Spanish spin. Made with red wine, apple cider, fruit and seasonal spices, it’s the perfect drink for Christmas parties – particularly as you can make it in big batches.

What Is Mulled Sangria?

Mulled drinks are hot, alcoholic beverages traditionally brewed with spices like cinnamon, cloves and ginger. The most popular variety is mulled wine, but mulled cider is also popular during the winter months.

While Sangria is usually associated with sunny afternoons in Spain, you can give the drink a wintry twist by making it hot and adding seasonal flavours. It’s a nice alternative for people who find mulled wine a bit too harsh, with the addition of honey, cranberries and cinnamon making it taste just like Christmas.

Mulled Sangria Recipe

Boqueria, a tapas bar in Battersea, London, has shared its mulled sangria recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Bottle full-bodied Rioja red wine
  • 4 shots brandy
  • Half a bottle of 330ml apple cider
  • 2 green apples sliced into sticks
  • 2 lemons sliced
  • 2 limes sliced
  • 1 orange sliced
  • Handful Cranberries
  • Handful Blackberries
  • 1 tablespoons of honey
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 clove

Tip: Keep a bit of the fruit back to garnish

Method:

  1. Simmer all the ingredients for about 20 mins so the fruit is properly drunken, leave to cool and then refrigerate for a few hours.
  2. Garnish with fresh fruit, dried orange, fresh thyme, star anise, pomegranate seeds.
