The national Champion of Champions has been announced

What makes the perfect burger? The quality of meat? Type of bread? Secret sauce? Whatever it is, a pub in Peckham has nailed it. The Montpelier in Peckham has come out tops at the National Burger Awards, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year with a special all-stars event.

National Burger Awards 2024: Winners Announced

The National Burger Awards has been running for a decade, and decided to mark ten years with a Champion of Champions contest, which saw 30 finalists from all over the country attending an event in London. After a day of taste testing, Whole Beast Kitchen, a pop-up housed within Peckham’s Montpelier pub, took home the crown for its Aged Cheeseburger.

It’s the restaurant’s signature dish, made with an aged beef batty, bread and butter pickles, smoked bone marrow, American cheese and Whole Beast burger sauce, inside a milk bun. Led by husband-and-wife team Sam and Alicja Bryant, Whole Beast specialises in nose-to-tail, live fire cooking.

‘It’s mad,’ says Sam. ‘To be invited back to be a part of it and then to win the whole thing is absolutely mental. This is a burger we’ve done every day for a year, so we were kind of relaxed and in our comfort zone. It’s great that what we cook every day has actually won it. We know some of these chefs really well, like El Perro Negro, Bleecker, people we really admire. To be competing against them is an honour in itself, but to win it is absolutely incredible.’

The live final saw Whole Beast battling it out against Glasgow favourite El Perro Negro, and smash burger expert Fattso in Bristol. Other burger spots to win awards included The Beefy Boys in Hereford, who scooped up the Best Looking Burger gong, MEATliquor, who took home Most Creative Burger, and London’s Black Bear Burger, who received the Bloggers’ Choice Award.
