This chocolate treat has won gold

This year, in a bid to boost its environmental credentials, the Olympic menu was given an overhaul, swapping rich French fare for lighter, healthier plant-based food. However, the dish everyone’s talking about this year is not the beetroot falafels but a gooey chocolate muffin, which has gone viral thanks to Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen.

This Chocolate Muffin Has Taken Over The Olympic Village

The self-declared ‘Muffin Man’ has posted a spate of TikTok videos professing his adoration for the sweet treat, which features a melted chocolate centre and chocolate chip topping. We see him strolling around the village with four muffins in his hands ahead of his first 800-metre heat, enjoying a Parisian sunset while tucking into one of the pastries, and lip-syncing the famous ‘Do you know the muffin man?’ dialogue from Shrek (with chocolate smeared around his mouth, naturally). Christiansen ranked the ‘insane’ muffin an 11/10, deeming it the ‘single greatest thing about the Olympic Village so far’.

So who is behind these winning muffins? Turns out they’re produced by a French producer called Coup de Pates. A spokesperson for Sodexo Live, the company handling the catering for the Olympic Village, confirmed the muffin is called the ‘Maxi Muffin Chocolat Intense’. They didn’t share the recipe, but described: ‘It is filled and topped with dark chocolate, featuring chunks of dark chocolate and milk chocolate.’

Chocolate Muffin Copycat Recipe

Although we haven’t been given the official winning formula, a chef called Danielle Sepsy has created a dupe muffin recipe, which she has shared on Instagram. It involves mixing classic baking ingredients including eggs, cocoa powder, chocolate chunks, unsalted butter and sugar, then creating a ganache using sweetened condensed milk , chocolate chips and vanilla extract. The muffins are baked in the oven, then a hole is cut in the centre, and the ganache is piped inside. You can find the full recipe on her Instagram.

Who Is Henrik Christiansen?

He has not yet won any medals for the 2024 Olympics.
