Pickles are having their time in the spotlight right now. First they hit the headlines after the England football team were spotted knocking back pickle juice shots to speed up recovery, and now TikTok is obsessed with pickle sandwiches. 

The Pickle Bun Sandwich Has Gone Viral

One creation in particular has caught the eye of foodies. It comes from New York deli Seven Brothers Gourmet, a family-owned Italian spot in Oceanside, Long Island, which is renowned for its gourmet subs. This new pickle number isn’t your average sandwich though: instead of using two slices of bread, a pickle is sliced down the middle, then each side is hollowed out and packed with sandwich fillings such as turkey, bacon and lettuce.

The dish was added to the menu in January this year, but it has really taken off over the past few months after being discovered by New York’s digital foodie brigade. One particularly popular video from TikToker @gabbyparmesan – self-declared ‘pickle sandwich girl’ – has amassed a whopping 4.5 million views for a clip of her trying said sandwich.

Now the deli sells up to 250 pickle sandwiches a day – and there’s even a dedicated waiting line for those in search of the sub in question (many of whom have driven for hours in search of the dish). ‘It has been pickle mania,’ said co-owner Anthony Fiorito. ‘I feel like we’ve been in the twilight zone with this whole thing.’ 

How To Make A Pickle Bun Sandwich

Don’t live Stateside and keen to get involved with the pickle fun? You can easily recreate the picklewich from home. Simply take a pickle, slice it in half, scoop out the inside, and fill with your ingredients of choice, such as meat, cheese and lettuce. A large pickle will work best, and a popular filling combination is turkey, cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, and red onion.
