Corona cocktails are in vogue

Picture the scene: you’re lying on your sun lounger by the pool, and it’s drinks time. What do you order? Perhaps a fruity Piña Colada? Or maybe an ice-cold Corona? Well, what about if we told you it was possible to blend the two to create the ultimate summer tipple? Enter the Piña Corona, TikTok’s latest obsession: a cocktail-beer hybrid which fans are claiming is the perfect balance of sweet and dry.

What Is A Piña Corona?

Fusion cocktails have been doing the rounds on TikTok for a while now. The Corona Sunrise took off last year, made by blending Corona with tequila, orange juice and grenadine, concocted within the beer bottle vessel. And now it’s the Piña Colada – or the Colada Corona, if you prefer – that’s getting the mash-up treatment. Don’t knock it before you’ve tried it: the crisp beer base is said to pair nicely with the citrus flavours of the Piña Colada, a classic summer cocktail made using rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice.

How To Make A Piña Corona

To make the drink, pour out half a bottle of Corona (or drink it). Then, pour two ounces of rum (white works best) and one ounce of coconut cream into the bottle. Top it up with pineapple juice to your preference – the more you add, the sweeter it will be. Another hack from TikTok: instead of shaking it and causing the drink to fizz up, simply place your thumb or a stopper over the top, and tip the bottle upside down a few times. Finish the drink off with a slice of lime for garnish.

Alternatively, you can mix the rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice in a cocktail tin first, then pour that into the Corona bottle with a funnel, bartender-style.

For a slightly lower alcohol content, you can make the same drink with a non-alcoholic Corona, or go the whole hog and use alcohol-free rum too. Another variation is creating the concoction then putting it in the freezer to create frozen Piña Coronas.
