It's hungry work seeing so many shows
In a pinch for some quick food at the Fringe? Here are three places to grab a pacy bite – or tipple – at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe 2024.
Quick Food At The Edinburgh Fringe: Where To Grab A Bite
Lannan Bakery
Walking around Stockbridge, I’m struck by two things: this area is beautiful, and everyone seems to be eating the same pastries. I follow the trail of pastry nuts and find myself at Lannan. Thank god I did. This is a rustic café popped on the corner of the street with a tiny interior that’s small, unassuming and yet totally packed with explosive treats.
It’s well worth joining the queue – when I arrive, it’s sizeable, but I hear this is quite common due to a recent build of hype around this place. And the queue makes sense as soon as I’ve tried their treats. (It’s worth mentioning it moves at reasonable pace, so it’s still a solid bet for quick food in Edinburgh).
Pastries here are inventive in a way that never feels too much. There’s a balance between summery flavours and big carb – peach flan paired with custard, for example. Takes on savouries don’t disappoint either – the Kimchi and cheese croissant is gorgeous (the pastry mellows out the strength of the kimchi and the aftertaste is exceptional). My favourite (by far) is the cardamom bun, and this has me coming back for more. Sweet, pillowy and oh-so-pungent. The kind of pastries you could bury your face in.
Lannan Bakery is located at 29-35 Hamilton Pl, Edinburgh Eh3 5BA. Open every Thursday – Sunday 8:00am – until sold out. instagram.com/lannanbakery
Electric X Origin Negroni Bar
Thirsty? Wash it all down here – at pace. If you’re a lover of negronis and coffee – this is the place for you. Origin Coffee and Electric Spirits have teamed up to create this August-only pop up. Located in South College street, it is supremely easy if you’re looking for a quick pre-show tipple. It’s also a great place to relax, and because it’s not over packed, allowing you to indulge with your drink in a relaxed, surprisingly cosy space.
Prices are good, too. A regular negroni will set you back £7 (a bargain if you’re used to southern prices), and it’s the same for the Cold Brew version. The latter is very rich, and slightly bitter but in a way that sits almost dangerously on your tongue.
Another fun offer is the Oatly Vanilla soft serve, which combines a single origin espresso with a coffee ice cream – and is the perfect treat to accompany your cold brew negroni.
Origin collaborate with different companies regularly so if this isn’t your style it’s worth keeping an eye out to see who they’re pairing with next but otherwise this is a lovely little gem tucked away from all the craze.
Electric X Origin Negroni Bar is located at 6-8 South College st, EH8 9AA. Open Monday – Sunday 18:00- 23:00 throughout August. origincoffee.co.uk/pages/origin-coffee-edinburgh
Kitchen Table By Twelve Triangles
Twelve triangle is beloved by locals for their pastries and sourdough – and really well regarded as a take away spot (particularly perfect for quick food if you’re running across Edinburgh in between shows) but Kitchen Table offers a sit down experience.
Tucked among plethora pastry and sandwich shops on Easter Street, Kitchen table does not stand out from the outside – but step inside and you’ll really enjoy a different take on breakfast dining.
Breakfast offered here is a bit more creative than your regular old full Scottish fry up. The butter beans on sourdough toast is one to definitely plump for – proving why the humble bean is king for most veg-first diets – totally creamy with a dash of chilli oil to bring a flash of heat. All flavours pair together in an elevated way.
Be sure to call ahead – there’s no guarantee of a table here. It’s busy! And rightly so – if I could come back here every day, I would.
Kitchen table by Twelve Triangles is located at 22-24 Easter Rd, EH7 5RG. Open Monday – Sunday 8:30- 16:00. twelvetriangles.co.uk
