Whether it’s vowing to avoid alcohol for 31 days, going vegan or joining a gym, many of us begin January by setting ambitious health goals. But according to research, by the second proper Friday of the month we’re often ready to give up already – hence why the date has been dubbed ‘Quitter’s Day’. In 2025 it falls on 17 January (3 January didn’t count apparently as we were all still in holiday mode) and one deviously clever London pub is capitalizing on our failures by offering pints for a mere 17p.

How To Get (Nearly) Free Beers This Quitter’s Day

Londoners yearning to break their Dry January resolutions can head to Market Place Vauxhall this Friday to secure their nearly free beers. All you need to do is head to the bar at lunchtime on 17 January (12 – 2pm) and confess your abandoned pledge, to which you’ll be treated to a pint of Asahi for just 17p.

Holly Hilton, Marketing Director of Market Place, said: ‘Let’s be honest, most of us set unrealistic goals after over-indulging during December. Rather than feeling guilty about it, why not embrace the fact we’re perfectly imperfect with an almost-free pint in good company? After all, you’ll be with others who agree life’s too short and have also broken their Dry January vow…!’

Market Place is a street food market and bar which has outposts in Vauxhall, Peckham, Harrow and Hounslow. You’ll find an array of different cuisines on offer, alongside drinks and live music – plus a programme of events ranging from pop-ups to quiz nights and DJ sets.

What Is Quitter’s Day?

Quitter’s Day is the unofficial holiday for breaking January resolutions. The term was coined by fitness app Strava: in 2019, the platform noticed there was a specific day most people were likely to give up their ‘new year new me’ goals. Strava analysed data from 31.5 million global January activities, pinpointing the second Friday in January as ‘Quitter’s Day’, and the name has stuck ever since.
