Sakura season installations and menus are popping up across the city
We’re just a few days away from the official first day of spring, which means London’s parks are soon to be transformed into pretty pink havens. Cherry blossom season usually peaks in April in the UK, although the blooms can appear as early as March, running until late May. And each year, a handful of restaurants get involved by creating beautiful installations and adding special dishes to their menus, inspired by the vibrant spring celebrations in Japan, known as sakura season or hanami.
Sakura Season: Cherry Blossom Pop-Ups In London
Tattu London
The signature motif of Manchester-born Asian restaurant Tattu is cherry blossom, so of course it goes big on sakura season. You’ll find a giant cherry blossom chandelier in the London branch year-round, and this April it’s being jazzed up with pink and purple shades, while the terrace will be given a seasonal makeover. Guests can enjoy the restaurant’s signature Cherry Blossom Dessert, made with chocolate, cherry and candy floss, alongside the Cherry Blossom Negroni, which is served with a mini cherry blossom tree. Alongside this, enjoy dishes from the a la carte menu, from truffle shiitake bao buns to shanghai black cod and green pepper lobster.

The Aubrey
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park’s restaurant The Aubrey is marking the arrival of spring with a menu shakeup, inspired by the Japanese art of Moritsuke – a concept focusing on the aesthetic arrangement of food on a plate. This will include a special cherry blossom dessert: a centrepiece edible bonsai tree made with crystallised white chocolate, azuki beans and cherries, designed to be paired with an Akashi Tai sparkling sake. Other new dishes will include premium steaks, served tableside, deboned poussin with a prawn and chicken filling, and whole dry aged sea bass, which is grilled over an open flame.

Sticks’n’Sushi
With 15 locations dotted across the capital, you’ll never be too far from a Sticks’n’Sushi in London. All branches are getting involved with sakura season by adding a floral touch to the signature sushi and grilled sticks, alongside special cocktails. The Sakura House Roll, for instance, features lobster, avocado and miso aioli, while the Sakura Cherry Fondant is a gooey Amenara cherry and white chocolate pudding, served with cherry biscuit crumble. Pair with cocktails like Beneath the Sakura Tree, a blend of Pisco Aba, St-Germain and pandan foam, or the Sakura Vesper, made with Botanist Gin and Sake Ono Junmai Daiginjo. The Covent Garden outpost will be looking particularly pretty, as its Henrietta Street terrace has been given a spring makeover in collaboration with St-Germain.

Roka’s Shochu Lounge
You can get your cherry blossom fix throughout the year at Shochu Lounge, the bar hidden beneath ROKA on Charlotte Street. The space is set beneath a canopy of cherry blossom, with pink art lining the walls. Diners can enjoy the full ROKA menu here, which includes a mix of sushi, sashimi and robata grills, alongside Japanese-inspired cocktails. There’s a special Sakura 75 cocktail on offer this spring, made with Roku gin, sakura tea and yuzu cordial, topped with champagne.

KOYN
Samyukta Nair’s Mayfair eatery is renowned for its aesthetic interiors and exquisitely crafted menu, but there’s even more visit to visit during spring, when the restaurant transforms into a blossoming haven. This year, KOYN will display a photographic exhibition titled Hanami by artist Rohan Shrestha, alongside a floral origami installation and Kyoto-inspired menu. Begin with the Kyoto Garden Elixir cocktail, made with The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, rhubarb syrup, beetroot and vanilla, before tucking int dishes like squid salad with watermelon radish, sea bream sashimi, and lamb loin with wasabi mayo. Finish on a sweet note with the Sakura Pavlova meringue with white chocolate, mochi and strawberry jus.
