How To Make TikTok’s Viral Smashed Potatoes

This ultra-crispy dish doesn’t disappoint


The humble potato – it’s a comfort food hero and an all-round pantry staple. But if you’re bored of the usual mashed, boiled or roast potatoes, TikTok’s smashed potato trend will help you level up. 

What Are Smashed Potatoes?

Forgoing the soft, creamy texture of mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes are boiled, tossed in oil and herbs, and then crushed into patties before being placed in the oven. This means that, on the outside, they’re just as crunchy as roast potatoes (thanks largely to the fact that you don’t need to peel them before boiling – the potato skins will crisp up in the oven). On the inside, meanwhile, they’re delightfully fluffy. 

How To Make Smashed Potatoes

  1. Bring a pot of water to the boil and cook your potatoes until soft.
  2. Drain the potatoes and leave them until they’re cool enough to handle.
  3. Add to a baking tray and toss with olive oil and herb, plus any other seasoning you fancy. (Add some butter for extra crispiness.)
  4. Using the bottom of a glass, ramekin or jar, crush the potatoes into small patties.
  5. Season with salt and pepper, then roast for about 25 minutes until golden and crispy. (You can also use the air fryer rather than the oven, if you’d prefer.)

How To Serve Them

Just like any other potato-based recipe, this one is extremely versatile: they make a handy side dish, but the bite-sized patties are also a great snack – you can top them with aioli, dip them in ketchup or even ad

d them to salads. 

Which Potatoes To Use

While Yukon potatoes are usually best for this recipe, you can use any potatoes you have to hand. (You can even branch out and try smashed sweet potatoes or smashed carrots).

Smashed Potato Salad

Smashed Potato Salad (serves 4) 600g maris piper potatoes peeled and quartered ½ tsp. dried chilli flakes 1 tsp. ground cumin 1 tsp. turmeric 1 tsp. onion granules 1 tsp. garlic granules 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. mustard seeds 3 tbsp. mayonnaise 1 tsp. wholegrain mustard ½ cucumber deseeded and diced ½ red onion diced 2 tbsp. flatleaf parsley 2 tbsp. fresh dill 1 tbsp. green chilli chopped 80g feta cheese crumbled Method: 1: Par boil the potatoes for eight minutes, then drain and leave to steam for five minutes. Pop the potatoes into a bowl, then sprinkle in the spices, Mix well then add into a baking tray along with some hot oil. Pop into an oven pre-heated to 200c / 180c fan, scatter the potatoes into the tray, then turn to coat generously in the oil. Cook in the oven for 30 minutes turning occasionally, crush with a glass then return to the oven for another 30 minutes, until crisp. 2: In a separate bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, cucumber, onion, herbs and chilli, then gently fold the crispy potatoes through. Fajita Smashed Potatoes

@becs.bites Airfryer Fajita Smashed Potatoes 🫶 obsessed!! recipe below 👇 ❤️ To serve 2 as a main or 4 as a side – I take around 400-500g baby potatoes and boil until softened 🧡 Set aside and leave to cool, then toss in your fave fajita seasoning (I had some @Old El Paso UK in my cupboard) with a few sprays of oil 💛 Once they’re coated, smash them using a heavy bottomed glass 💚 Add to your airfryer and add a bit more oil 💙 I like to cook on 180 for 10 mins, then 200 for 10 mins 💜 Now you can sprinkle with a bit of salt and herbs and eat like this.. OR you can take it to the next level like I did!
