Sundays just got a little more interesting
London is home to hundreds of fabulous roasts. Every Sunday, the city comes alive to celebrate the UK’s favourite dish, with each restaurant putting their personal stamp on the tradition in a bid to be crowned top dog (or, rather, dinner). But what sets a good roast apart from a great one? While the food itself is the main defining factor, there’s something to be said for the setting itself – and atmospheric wow factor comes in spades at Westminster Abbey, which has just unveiled a new roast menu for the summer.
You Can Now Tuck Into A Sunday Roast At Westminster Abbey
Having claimed its spot in the heart of London over a thousand years ago, Westminster Abbey is one of the city’s greatest churches – and a major attraction for visitors from all over the world. But while tourists might typically pay a visit to marvel at its architectural wonders or attend one of its daily services, foodies can find incentive in the Abbey’s growing culinary offering.
Serving up breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, Westminster Abbey’s dining destination Cellarium has been feeding hungry tourists and locals alike for a while now – but the latest addition to the menu will bring the humble roast to the forefront. Diners will be able to their Sunday lunch either underground in the World Heritage Site’s historic vaulted medieval cloisters, or in its upstairs glass-roofed dining space, which boasts some lovely views over the Abbey.
What’s On The Menu?
Served from 12pm, the Sunday roast menu at Westminster Abbey is split into three courses (with sides of bread and chips, if you so fancy). Diners can start off their experience with a choice of soup (which changes weekly), a courgette and ricotta tart or a heritage tomato salad, before getting to the main event: the roast. The cuts on offer include lamb chop, chicken breast and beef steak, which are all served with a selection of roasted seasonal vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. Those with a sweet tooth (and room to spare) can find further delight in the curated dessert menu, which spotlights a homemade New York cheesecake served with berry coulis and vegan ice cream topped with chocolate crumble and raspberry compôte.
