The 2024 list has dropped: who made the cut?
Which is the top restaurant in the globe right now? According to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, announced in a glitzy ceremony in Las Vegas last night, the most impressive eatery is Disfrutar in Barcelona – renowned for its imaginative 30-course menus. It wasn’t the sparkliest year for London though, with the capital city seeing just two of its restaurants securing a spot on the prestigious list.
Which Are The World’s Best Restaurants For 2024?
The top-ranking London eatery for 2024 was Kol, the buzzy Mexican restaurant opened in Marylebone in 2020. It’s the brainchild of chef Santiago Lastra, who trained at culinary schools in Mexico and Copenhagen before making a name for himself running sellout supper clubs around the world. His London restaurant offers a fresh take on Mexican cuisine, using British ingredients to create innovative tasting menus, which feature dishes like langoustine tacos, scallop ceviche, and pork cheek carnitas.
It was a celebratory night, too, for Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale, the founders of two-Michelin-starred restaurant Ikoyi, which came in at number 42. The acclaimed spot, located on the Strand, combines West African spices with British ingredients, made using organic meats, biodynamic vegetables and fish from UK waters dispatched using the Ikejime method.
Other London restaurants were listed in the 50 – 100 section, including The Clove Club, which fell from number 32 last year to 80th place for 2024. Notting Hill favourite Core by Clare Smyth, meanwhile, came in at number 97, alongside buzzy Soho spot Mountain, which scooped up 94th place after opening just last year.
Created by British media group William Reed, the annual list is put together by a panel of more than 1,000 figures from the food and drink industry, including chefs, restaurateurs and food writers.
