The 3ft-tall egg is on display at Cadbury World

With its irresistible creamy fondant centre and thick milk chocolate shell, it’s easy to see off a Creme Egg in seconds. But it would take a little longer to get through the new giant version, which confectioners believe is the world’s largest Creme Egg.

How Big Is The World’s Largest Creme Egg?

Created at Cadbury World in Bournville, Birmingham, the supersized egg is a whopping three feet tall, roughly the same height as an emperor penguin. It’s hefty in weight too, coming in at 7st 1lbs (45kg) – equivalent to a newborn horse. And there’s no fakeness here: the entire thing is made of real chocolate, with the signature gooey filling and engraved logo, wrapped in the red, purple and gold foil wrapper we all recognise.

The egg took chocolatiers Terry Collins and Dawn Jenks two and a half days to make. ‘We challenged ourselves to create something unique and memorable this Easter, and what’s more iconic than a Creme Egg?’ said Jenks. ‘Replicating the much-loved Cadbury Creme Egg on an extra-large scale was an ambitious project, and it has been so rewarding to see the vision brought to life.’

So how do you produce an egg of this size? ‘To actually make the egg we’ve had to have a mould, which we’ve got two sides of, and then we have to build up the chocolate by hand to make sure that the egg actually stays intact,’ said Collins during an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live.

He also revealed that nobody ‘gets to eat the egg, unfortunately’ (although he was tempted to have a nibble during the process). Instead, it will be on display until 27 April in the chocolate-making zone at Cadbury’s World.

The first Cadbury chocolate eggs filled with cream were created in 1923, but the Creme Egg as we know didn’t arrive until 1963, under the name Fry’s Creme Eggs, changing to Cadbury Creme Eggs in 1971. The chocolate treat has remained popular ever since, with over 200 million sold annually in the UK.
